So I had my Ctv done today to look for internal jugular vein compression. Some of the images attached. Does anyone know if the red arrow is my styloid? Thanks

Hi Natty04,

That does look very much like it could be your styloid, & if it is, it’s very thick & it’s also elongated. Both those features would certainly help cause your symptoms. Did you get an image of the other side as well?

That’s it in 3d. Not sure if I measured from the right starting point?

That’s a better view- measuring isn’t always accurate, it looks very long though, & does look like it’s compressing a blood vessel, & the cervical vertebrae process looks quite long too? A few members have had that…

In addition, I marked with a blue line a suspiciously looking structure, which to me looks like a part of calcified ligament (disclaimer: I am not a doctor).

Could it be that there are both a) elongated and very strangely pointed styloid process, and b) at least part of the ligament calcified?

In that case this part would look like a slingshot/wishbone. Probably you’d like to play with the slicer a bit more, and especially adjust the “shift” parameter (near the other controls like Preset etc.) to “hide” the vascular elements and see what kind of bony structure is over there…

Never heard about the cervical vertebrae being long. Is that congenital?

On this image I think you can see where the styloid and c1 meet the blood flow fades in the jugular

I had a look thanks. It was my other styloid on that picture. It’s a lot smaller so don’t think they would class my left side as eagles

I dont know. Im not as experienced as others reading these. Looks like the other side is elongated too. Also looks like you have quite an angle on the worst one.

These are some other images of the smaller side. I thought normal styloid process is around 3cm for most people?

Yes, there have been a few members with unusually long vertebral processes, I guess maybe it could be a hereditary thing.

Your right styloid is nasty looking! So glad you’ve gotten some good images of it. I’ve got to say that even your left side looks longer than average to me. I also agree that the transverse process of the cervical vertebra looks pretty long on the right. That may be due to the image angle though. I do agree w/ vdm that there may be a little calcification on your s-h ligament on the left side (see the random white spot under your jaw on the image of your left styloid). That could also just be an artifact on the image.

Thanks for your feedback. I’m really hoping this is the cause to my mad head symptoms, ear issues and vision issues. If it isn’t, then I have exhausted all other routes.

The calcified bone in that image, is actually the other styloid, showing in that angle.

That’s my left and right side. The jugulars look compressed to me. I’m just scared for them to say it’s normal and wouldn’t be causing my symptoms. I’ve had so many set backs and it’s all “unremarkable” I suppose it’s a protection mechanism x

You’re headed to the most experienced ES surgeon in the UK. He’s seen a fair number of ES patients including jugular compression in a number of cases. I know he won’t be blind to your situation, but I also understand your fears about this being missed _again_. Voice your concerns & trust that Mr. Axon will give you the best possible care. 🤗

@Jules

Thanks so much to you both. The support and reassurance on this group is truly amazing 💓

I think because it’s nearly 3 years and I’ve had so many dead ends, I’m just scared to for another “it’s all normal” or yes but it wouldn’t be causing your symptoms

I’m praying this is it it thou and I actually do have vascular eagles. Even a diagnosis at this stage would be such a blessing.

I will keep you all posted on what dr Axon comes back with.

Thanks again. I truly appreciate it x
