All looking very similar in size! I think it’s going to take some time to heal right! Once the soreness goes, get rubbing that bio oil in!!!
When my C-section opened up it took 3 months to heal and actually now it’s not a bad scar at all. It was the second cut there too. You’ll be surprised how well it will heal in time. I guess we are all early days in the full healing.

Actually I have been using silicone gel; maybe that is what the flakiness is now - I guess it dries out and peels off.
Not sure about Bio oil, with my sensitivities, but I have rosehip oil and am hoping that helps. Who knows!
@Jacqui I’m sure it will heal fine. I had to have daily dressings done at the hospital for a while with the C-section one and I got to see the healing process quite well. One day it’d look healed suddenly and the next a massive 5cm deep cavity! Healing is from the inside out. That took 12 weeks, so I’d imagine this would be much less. I reckon by 3 months it will hardly be noticeable.
I’ve been smashing the bio oil and massaging it in. Hopefully it’s not possible to overdo that? Also been trying silicone scar strips. Not sure how they work but they go on easily enough. Unfortunately not waterproof though as I’d hoped to wear it to avoid sun exposure on the scar. Failed miserably at that!
I don’t think you can have too much bio oil. I think there’s just a point where more stops making a difference. Might not be great in the sun, you’ll fry it. 
I think scars go red before they start to vanish… ?
Tbh I’m less worried about the scar and more so about feeling better. If I have to have a matching one on the other side, I’m totally OK with it. I’ll consider a tattoo! 
(not joking either).
Hope you’re both starting to feel some progress. All my pain has completely gone (aside from normal healing soreness)! The neurological stuff is still going strong though….
A reminder to you all that healing skin is more fragile & subject to sun damage. It’s critical to either use sunscreen or cover your incision if you’ll be out in the sun for extended periods for the first year post op.
@Warrick - please be careful with yours going forward. I’m sorry you all weren’t told about this in your post op notes.
I used Mederma scar cream w/ sunscreen on my incisions when they were closed up enough to do so. It worked great for me.

Thanks for the reminder, yes I knew this about scars and have been wearing a big hat and using a combination of strategically placed hair and an umbrella to shade it from the sun!
Daren’t use sun cream on it just yet.
@Jacqui I’ll be digging out my scarf collection later and working out how to incorporate into my summer outsits! I burn too easily.
I’ve totally made peace with the scar now the initial shock has passed and it’s less red.
Emailed JH sec to try get that CT scan (if I can get it before my Neurosurgeon appointment that’d be good). Not sure if you guys had one already of requested via JH ?? Wondering if I can get done locally. The I guess I will find out if I need surgery for styloid 2, physio/back surgery or just some therapy!
Your scars all look like they’re healing well! Mine was quite lumpy initially but has evened out, I remember mentioning it at my 6 week post-op check as I had one quite noticeable bump, but was told it was fine & it has gone with time…
To provide scar reassurance it will fade to a fine white line with time and be fine. D

I was doing better - recovered after a bit of a camping setback. Too much too soon!
But today I am getting zappy pains again and it feels like it’s more numb than it was, mainly from just under my jawlline right down to the scar, but as far forward as the front of my chin too. Have you guys still got numbness?
@Jacqui - Zappy pains are a good sign that your nerves are recovering. 
You may get all sorts of different sensations as they heal. Numbness may last quite a number of months i.e. a year or longer. If/when the numb area starts awakening, you’ll get zappy, tingly, & maybe some sharp pains as the nerves turn back on. Forewarned is fore-armed!
@Jacqui Hi, so 3 weeks today and still a bit of numbness and soreness. I’m finally able to sleep on my side though, after months of feeling a styloid pressing my jaw and waking me up with numbness in my arm and pulsating down my neck! I can still feel heeling and get some zaps, but I think nerves healing. The scar is pretty neat now.
Generally though I’m feeling very bad. The surgery fixed my pain issues, but the neuro ones are awful. The tinnitus after 10 days has calmed a little, but is still much worse than before. I get episodes frequently where it ramps up like intense electrical buzzing through my head, nausea and dizziness like my head is spinning. I get pressure at the base of my skull too. Spoke to JH who thinks unlikely post op related, but early days.
I see a Neurosurgeon at Cleveland next week and hope to get a spinal MRI. My GP has dismissed my spinal issues, but Bupa reviewed my X-rays and referred me urgently to a Neurosurgeon. I need to find out what’s causing these symptoms before I book in the second styloid. See JH 22nd and cope I have answers by then. I definitely have cervical issues and mild thoracic scoliosis and I suspect all of these things are connected. I’ve been fobbed off by the NHS for a decade with the anxiety card and I’m seeing this through this time!!
Hope you feel better soon. It does sound like normal healing stuff though, like @Isaiah_40_31 ssys.
@Warrick hope you had a good holiday. First thing I’m doing when I’m well again is booking bc a family holiday. I need to make up for all this lost time. It’s been such a bad experience. No regret on the surgery though, it has helped, I just appear to have more going on.
Excuse typos. Just woke up! Head buzzing and recovering from full on aura migraine with headache and nausea yesterday… neurological mess!
I sure hope the neurologist can help solve the mystery of what’s causing the terrible symptoms you have now, @BabzieAM. It may be that with one styloid out, the symptoms the other one is causing have bumped up their intensity. I sure had that happen. One possible explanation is because, w/ one styloid gone. the “balance” in the neck gets off allowing the remaining styloid greater contact with the soft tissues on it’s side of the neck & thus worse symptoms.
@Isaiah_40_31 Possibly. I’m really hoping I can get tej scans and answers, the I’ll take whatever surgery or treatments best to resolve them. All I can say is thank goodness for my Bupa insurance!!!
