Latest up date: Doctor May’s office called to reschedule the appointment until the first week of December. And the University of Miami, who directed me to Dr. Sweeny on their staff, called yesterday to cancel my appointment in two days because Dr. Sweeny does not treat Eagle Syndrome. Not gonna lie, this is becoming a real pain in the butt too.
Thank you for the symptoms reminder. I’m sorry you’re getting put off by doctors but at least Dr. Sweeny didn’t waste your time & $ only to tell you once you were in the office that he doesn’t treat ES. Besides Dr. Delgaudio, have you seen any of the other doctors in your state who are on our Doctors List? Many of our members from your state have traveled out of state for surgery because they had problems similar to what you’re experiencing. If you’re able to travel for surgery, you might want to at least think about that possibility.
That’s so frustrating for you! I guess that you could ask Dr May’s office to put you on a cancellation list if you’re able to get to an appointment at short notice? Some members have got in earlier that way with doctors…
No, I have not seen anyone else in Georgia who does the surgery. I have a follow up scheduled with Dr. May on 5 December. He is the only other Dr. in Georgia I have found that actually does the procedure.
In Florida, U of M has re-scheduled my Sweeny appointment to Dr. Donald Weed. I got a call form his office asking for images. I am at this point taking that as a positive sign.
Sadly my expectations are dropping.
@tjrusure - I’m glad you have the two appointments scheduled that you do have. I hope that at least one of those will be very helpful for you. What date has your surgery in FL been rescheduled for?
Good Evening Everyone, It has been a while since I updated on what is going on, So I thought I would bring everything up to date.
First, I was finally able to be seen by Dr. Weed at the University of Miami in December. It was a very good experience. He is very knowledgeable and very understanding of Eagle Syndrome. He did his exam and reviewed all my images. He also reviewed the notes from Dr. Delgado and the other ENTs I had seen. He shared his plan would be to do one side, drain over night, spend one night in the hospital and then discharge. He is very cautious and said the procedure should not take too long if there are no complications. If everything goes as planned, he will schedule the second surgery a couple of months later. He stated he would make a decision on how much to remove based on what he sees during the procedure, cautioning that he does not want to remove to much and cause other issues.
With regards to Dr. May, I was finally able to have a phone appointment with him. Because of conflicts in schedule, I was seen my his Nurse Practitioner in the office. The nurse practitioner was very knowledgeable and I felt comfortable with him. He too did a complete exam and gave his impressions to Dr. May. When I spoke with Dr. May, he to had reviewed every note from every other doctor including Dr. Weed’s and agreed with Dr. Weed’s assessment and approach. They were almost verbatim in how they would do the procedure. Of interesting note, Dr. May did ask some specific questions about pains I was having that would start under the jaw line that would then yield to pain down the throat. He stated that he considers that to be a positive indicator of Eagles.
I feel totally comfortable with both of them.
Because my move from Florida has been delayed, I decided to go with Dr. Weed. We spoke again earlier this month and he stated he would get me in as soon as he had an opening in his schedule.
I was notified earlier this week that an opening was available for 27th of February. So on the 27th I will be having my first surgery with Dr. Weed at the University of Miami, UHealth. Looking forward to it.
I will let you know what happens.
Thank you for coming back to update us, @tjrusure. I’m glad you found not one but two doctors who do ES surgery & with whom you’re comfortable. It’s good Dr. Weed is cautious & I’ll look forward to hearing how your recovery goes. Assuming you get good results, we will be happy to add him to our Doctors List.
I applaud you for your patience in waiting to see these two doctors & for your thoroughness in checking out possible ES surgeons so you’d be certain when you found the one who is the best fit for you.
I’m glad your surgery isn’t far off. I’ll put the date on my calendar so I can pray for you & Dr. Weed then.
I’m glad that you’ve found a good surgeon who you’re comfortable with, made a note of the date & praying that all goes well
Thank you for your prayers. I appreciate it.
Well, so bad news. My surgery has been cancelled. My doctor was injured this past weekend and they have had to cancel my surgery…I wish him all the best. I guess I am just not living right.
Oh no, that is so unlucky! Did they give you any idea of how long he’ll be off for? I know what it’s like to psyche yourself up for surgery & have it cancelled, it happened to me too & I had to wait another month, so I feel for you
Based on what I was told, it is going to me some time. They are going to check the other providers in group to see who could do the procedure. I know there are other doctors in the group who have. I do not think it is going to be happening any time soon sadly. Apparently they are pretty well swamped trying to cover his other cases for people who have to have surgery.
@tjrusure - WOW! That’s very unfortunate for both for Dr. Weed & you! I hope his injuries don’t prevent him from going back into medical practice, & I hope you are able to get on another provider’s surgery schedule ASAP. What about Dr. May since you’ve had a consult with him? Is he also booked out quite far?
@tjrusure Oh man. I am so sorry to hear that. You must be awash with emotions. The day before my surgery I was informed that my insurance was denying it and I remember the absolute turmoil of having finally gotten to the day and having it ripped away. I hope you can get a new date soon with a surgeon you trust. Hang in there!
@tjrusure - Just wanted to check in to see if you pursued surgery w/ Dr. Weed since his injury that caused your surgery to be cancelled. If not, did you reconsider having your surgery with Dr. May?
The information you gave us in your posts about doctors in FL & GA was very valuable. We’ve been contacted by Dr. Todd who was an associate of Dr. May when they both worked in NC. Dr. Todd mentioned that Dr. May is very experienced with ES surgeries & helped teach him how to do them well. Dr. Todd is now in CO.
I certainly hope you’ve gotten a surgery date by now so ES recovery is in your future.
Thanks for your message.
I have actually been contacted by Dr. May’s office. Sadly it took 3 months to get the radiology department in Florida to send the CD to Dr. May’s office. Once he got them he moved quickly. He stated that, bilaterally, my styloid processes are of significant length and need to come out.
I am scheduled for an in office consultation with him the end of May. Surgery Scheduled for the middle of June and follow up scheduled for the first of July.
Looks like I finally have a plan in place again. Hopefully Dr. May will not have to cancel like he did last time. It is good news to hear that another Doctor (Dr. Todd) can endorse his knowledge.
It was interesting to note that when I was speaking with his office, his assistant said that his Eagle Syndrome appointments were picking up.
Such a long wait for you, but good you’re on the list again now…Interesting that ES appointments have increased, we think it’s way more common than the figures show, definitely under diagnosed…maybe at some point this will get picked up & it’ll be taught properly in med school!
Thank you for the update, @tjrusure. I’m sorry for the slow radiology dept. in FL but am glad that Dr. May was quick to help you. It’s also good news that he was willing to schedule your consult & surgery together vs making you wait to schedule your surgery till after the consult which is what most doctors do. That certainly helped you get an earlier surgery date than if you didn’t schedule it till the end of May.
This is also good news! I’m glad he is diagnosing & doing surgery for ES on a somewhat regular basis. We need some reliable ES doctors in GA on our Doctors List.
