That’s interesting, I’ve never read any mention of the ICA nerve involvement before!
Great information, @Thans! Thank you so much for sharing it. There’s always more to learn.
Hi! Were there anythings you could do? I’m a little over a week out from surgery and the pain under my jaw is so intense. Im getting like “all bite” pain any time i eat on both sides and intermittent dull icepick pain on the right. Surgeon says it’s too early for first bite pain but i don’t think it’s that.
First Bite Syndrome can start w/in a few days of surgery but also can start later. Mine started on day 5 post op. We’ve had members with FBS experiences that differ from the norm i.e. scalp pain, face pain beyond the parotid gland area, neck/jaw pain. I think when the glossopharygeal nerve fires, it can stimulate other nerves to get upset & react as well. Stay super hydrated i.e. drink 80-100 oz non-sugary (sugar is inflammatory) & no caffeine liquids per day as that will keep your saliva more dilute which helps reduce FBS pain. There are other good suggestions on the forum which you can find using the magifying glass search tool at the top right of this page. It usually goes away w/in a couple of months & the intensity may start gradually reducing over the 30-45 days. If it’s too miserable, you can ask for an Rx for a nerve pain medication to take temporarily until the pain is more tolerable.
