17 YEAR OLD - 3 days post-op

Hey Marget.

I had little success with anything. I’ve been on a laundry list of medications for the last couple of years but nothing seemed to help.

I am beginning to think it is because of the compression of my carotid artery. I was not getting enough blood flow for the medications to have full effect. Interesting stuff.

I’ve heard people saying they have gotten eagle pain relief from carbamazepine (anti-convulsant). There are many other treatments (steroids, anti-depressants) worth looking into before and after surgery.

I’ve done many of the other treatments. Not a lot helped but maybe it’s worth a shot.

Jimmy

Ya I’ve done the same nothing helps. I live in Az where cannabis is medical and I have found some relief from that. Prednisone use to help but not really anymore. My surgery is in a week and I am so ready. How long were you confined to bed after surgery? I’m just ready for this part of my life to be behind me. I’m 57 and my husband is getting ready to retire early because of me. I want a happy life with little pain. :hugs:. Thank you for all your support. You are wise beyond your years.

Hi Margret,

I am the same age. At this point in our lives we still have lots of living to do but ES certainly puts a huge damper on that. I am still weeks away from my consult with the experienced surgeon and it cant come soon enough. All the best to you. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

BG,

I will be praying for you. This process is grueling. My surgery Monday and it still feels like forever away. Hang in there :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Hi Margret,

You will not be bed bound post op. If you stick w/ your pain med regimen as Rxed by your surgeon (even waking up during the night to take it) & ice your neck for 15 min. on & at least 45 min. off as often as you need to during weeks 1 & 2 of recovery, you’ll be doing a great service to yourself. I didn’t have my first surgery till I was 58. I came home from the surgery center & camped out in a recliner that day & for most of the first week during the day. That first day, I iced my neck a lot & snoozed (anesthesia induced…). I was given Percocet which made me a bit loopy, but it kept the pain at bay. My surgeon said by the second day post op, he expected me to be taking three 10 min. walks over the course of a day. I walked up & down my hallway w/ a family member on my arm initially but was fine to walk w/o help by day 3.

Another HUGE help is the ever promoted wedge pillow (Bed Bath & Beyond is a good resource for those). Sleep w/ your head elevated to 30º if you can. Jules & some other people also found that adding a V or U shaped pillow (like you’d use on an airplane) to the wedge pillow helped w/ neck comfort. I had to add a bunch of bed pillows to the top of my wedge pillow to make the angle steep enough. It was a bit tough getting used to sleeping nearly sitting up, but thankfully the pain meds helped w/ that.

That’s awesome news your husband is thinking of retiring early to spend more time w/ you. Mine has been at his company for 40 years this fall. I’m on my knees begging him to retire!! :joy:

I have your surgery date on my calendar & will pray for you especially that day. So glad it’s coming up quickly!

I hope that your surgery goes well next week; I’ll be praying for you, keep strong while you wait, & a big hug to you…

Wow thank you for all the advice. I feel much better about the recovery. I am not one that likes to be confined and with this ES I’ve been home in bed far to much. I will pray for you also. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thank you so much

Hey Jimmy, I’m 5 days till surgery and omg I am so ready. Did you ever have new different pain? Tonight I’m having sharp pain on my Eagle side by my temple. I hope you are feeling better. I can’t believe at 17 you are having to deal with this. I’m praying for you. Margret

When symptoms worsen like that just before surgery it’s helpful in a way- you know you’ve made the right decision to have the op! God bless, I pray you’ll not be anxious beforehand…

Thank you! Yes I am so sure I need this.

@jimmyeagle - Hi how’s going ? How’s your healing going ?
Thanks
Tina
