Weird question, but for those who had their styloids removed, did any of you get to keep them? Did you ask? I have surgery on the 28th to remove my first styloid, and I kinda wanna keep it. Not sure why. I feel like I should be able to hold the thing that’s given me such grief for so long. Maybe burn it? Do a ritual? Throw it in the ocean? 90s style shark tooth necklace? Not sure. But I just wonder if the surgeons will let me have it. Not sure why they wouldn’t if I request it specifically?
It’s certainly interesting to see those nasty spikes? Some members have been allowed to keep the styloids I think, but usually they go to histopathology for checking, sometimes doctors will take photos with a ruler to show the length of them… I didn’t ever get to see or keep mine, but tbf I didn’t think to ask!
In the US it seems that most doctors won’t let you keep your styloid(s). I did ask & was turned down for the reason @Jules said - the spike had to be sent to the lab for evaluation (kinda lame in my book!). Most surgeons will take a picture of it for you & some will even have your surgery videoed if you ask. My surgeon didn’t even want me to see it but a kindly nurse snagged the specimen jar my second one was in so I could get a picture of it. I forgot to ask to see my first one. ![]()
