I had my left side done. It was 5.6 cm long.
I choose to do an external surgery, due to the recommendation from my surgeon/doctor.
We have already set up a new time in december to determine if the right side processus styloideus shall be removed.
Im pretty sure we’ll take the right one out to.
Now my left bone is “abit shorter than the normal processus is” as the surgeon said.
For your knowledge im a 22 years old man from sweden. I found my enlongend processus styloideus by my self, i felt an abnormal pointy thing under my left jaw, did some research and demanded a CT-scan to se if i had englongend ones, and yes i did.
Well done Max...hope you get better soon...and congratulation for discovering ES by your own. The same happened to me.....going on saturday to see if one famous surgeon will perform the surgery on me.....so nervous.....because he has to exame and then to decide......keep well.....Zdravka Max said:

Hi glad to hear your surgery went well Max! Brave of you to decline morphine, I didn't but the doctor said that pain could be different for everyone. I'm experience the worst pain ever. Hope you'll carry on getting better and continue to feel good! :)
Hang in there. I’m one week post surgery and feel pretty good except now I have first bite syndrome. Watch out for that. Ice on and off every 15 minutes really helped the swelling.
How now is common first bite.....I have not read here about it so often....this is so scarry.....so if you have first bite syndrome.....you can feel worse....O my God..this is driving me crazy...why this is happening...has something to do with the way surgery was done.....? Thank you Jules.....I thing I am going to die....the things I have read about first bite syndrome are horrific....people rely suffer.....I am totaly lost.....the maksiofacial surgeon mention this, the ETN neck and scull base surgeon did not say nothing...he just said he did cca 10 surgeries and none came back to complain.....maksiofacial surgeon i saying he can do the surgery on 18.1.2016, the ETN said only in april...by then I will die of pain...tomorrow I see another surgeon in Croatia......I am rely totaly lost....I cant go on like this...just cant...so scarred...and what does it mean it does improve with time? So you have for the rest of your life this uncomfortable filling...and when this first bite is occuring after surgery in time wise.....Jesus this is too much to handle.....thank you for the answer Jules :( Jules said:
The first bite syndrome seems to be quite common post surgery! It does improve with time. Glad you're feeling well, Groot!
My surgeon warned me about it. It showed up on the 5th day. Apparently, this can happen after any neck dissection. It also somehow involves salivation. So if you chew with no food in your mouth there is no pain. As soon as you put in food and start chewing you feel the pain. The pain lasts for about a minute. I will take this annoyance any day over the pain from ES.
Yes, I agree with Groot- it's nothing like the pain of ES. I didn't find I had it every time I ate, certain foods made it worse. I only get it occasionally now. I wasn't warned about it, but did read it here. It's just like if you suddenly eat something really sour or sharp, you get the same sort of wince.
Hi, good to hear you’re doing well I Am Groot…I hope you get rid of the first bite syndrome. I didn’t even know about that syndrome. I hope you also get better Jules with the FBS.
Zdravka my thoughts are with you and I’m hoping you get help soon <3
Well, the pain is more intense then yesterday, but with some painkillers im fine im eating as normal and im able to do basic stuff at home. How are you doing? Any progress?
The pain was more intense day 2 for me as well. Its nice to hear you’re able to do basic stuff, hope you feel even better tomorrow! I’m staying in bed not eating much, but I can drink water so that’s good! I’ve manage to eat cold squashed bananas and ice cream but I get stomache pain every time I eat and feel like I’m about to throw up. I hope I’m able to eat tomorrow. I think my stomach pain are due to the ProViva (probiotic drink with Lactobacillus plantarum) drinks I had plenty of after surgery at the hospital and during day 2, my body doesn’t seem to like it at all. I’m histamine intolerant and as I red about proviva I realized it’s probably not a good idea for me to drink since its yeast and I’m intolerant of it because it contains a high value of histamine. Anyway I hoping I can eat soon:)
You probably can't go by me as a gauge for pain and eating, lol. My wife says I am abnormal because aside from the first night with painful swallowing I have had almost no pain. I took some Tylenol that first night but that was it. I ate some crackers when we got home. Within 24 hours I was eating regular meals. I'm guessing that eating is much easier with external surgery than internal. Good luck to you Max, SaaMee and Zdravka.
Thank you I amGrot ...thank you again, and all the best to you ...hugs....

I wanted to tell you to not let first bite syndrome scare you too much. I got it after two of my surgeries. With me, it hurt a lot for about 5-10 seconds or so when I would first open my mouth to eat something (hence the name). The first time I got it, it faded a lot the first month and gradually got better over the next couple months and went away completely after about 4 months. I think most people report that it goes away completely after a couple months. The second time I got it, it gradually got better over the following couple months, but I still had it once a while, not too bad, for a couple years. It was definitely something I could live with. But now, surprisingly, it seems to have gone away completely after I had my last surgery in September. But don't let it scare you or stop you from having a surgery. It only happens once in a while and it fades pretty quickly. Having Eagles is much worse in my view. Good luck!!
Hi how are you all? Max how's your recovery going? I'm doing fine, still in small amount of pain but can feel many benefits already. It's been 16 days now. The first week was awful mostly because I didn't get enough pain relief, due to that I have been taking morphine for a long time but also because I did both sides One of the hardest thing has actually been to quit the oxy, but tomorrow morning will be my last pill ever I hope. I'm very glad I did the surgery because now I can swallow properly and it feels like my air flow is better. Apparently the styloid process has penetrated my throat which made it difficult for me to swallow some foods. I thought the swallowing problems where due to allergies and asthma. Over the last year I've lost over 10 kg because I've been eating alot of soup.. I mean alot! =) One other benefit (the most important one) is that I can sleep lying down without feeling my pulse in my head or get intense pain. Awesome feeling! I can't wait to get my life back on track after been lying in bed and being in pain for so many months. I haven't worked for a year so I'm very exited to get back. I'm thankful for all the support this site has given me, it's been everything, my friend to turn to when no one else could understand what I'm going through. Tanks to you all & especially Jules -You are inspirational and I admire you ! <3 I hope I can help someone else the same way in the future!
SaaMee, thanks for the update! You've had a lot of progress in 16 days - what great news. And good job on quitting the oxy. I hope it goes well after tomorrow morning. It's good to hear that a couple people recently had bilateral surgeries and have done fine. You can get it all done at once. It's a hard recovery - but worth it I would think. Hey, you can eat more than soup now!
Really glad that you're feeling so much better, SaaMee! And that you're feeling the benefits already, hope that your healing continues well, and that you can soon get back to work! It gives members so much encouragement to hear when surgery has worked- in the Groups section of the page there is one for success stories, you could always post about your experience in there, I don't think that there's been that many added to it, which isn't a fair reflection of how many there's been!
I'm really glad that you've found the site helpful- if I hadn't joined here I wouldn't have found out about the doctor who did my surgery, and wouldn't have been able to have surgery, so it's nice to keep that help going!
