If you’ve had Surgery, for Eagles, or any Surgery for that Matter, before going back into the OR did you see your Surgeon? After Surgery, did you see your Surgeon? In the OR, before Sedation?
Have you ever had a Surgery when you didn’t SEE your Surgeon at some point before/after Surgery?
SO many surgeries. I have ALWAYS seen the surgeon and the anesthesiologist during the preop time. The surgeon literally signs the body part that is being operated on after oral confirmation. In the OR I typically see the surgeon briefly before being sedated, because they now like for people to position themselves on the table, so no significant sedation before getting into there. And always after as well. After is when it’s really helpful to have your companion there, because even if I feel okay at the moment, I’m usually fuzzier than I think and have a hard time remembering what the surgeon said.

My last Surgery was rough, I woke up while I was still intubated and was very alert as to what was going on… they wouldnt allow anyone to come back with me until my Blood Pressure was stable, which is understandable, in case something happened to me, but I was very alert and very vocal that I wanted my Partner there with me… but even after, I never saw my Surgeon…
Saw the anesthesiologist before, but not the surgeon…then saw the surgeon afterwards, but was quite groggy so couldn’t take much in…sounds awful, what you went through with your last surgery, hopefully your revision surgery will be better 
@MamaBear6 - For my ES surgeries, my surgeon came to see me briefly before to confirm which side was being done & to mark the proper side as Sharon noted. After my first styloidectomy, my surgeon stopped by very briefly to chat abt the surgery. Second surgery, I saw him before but not after until the follow-up appt.
I’ve had other surgeries where I did see the doctor before & after or before but not after. I’m not sure how a surgeon decides when to see a patient or not. Maybe part of it is how close together his/her surgeries are scheduled.
You should ask Dr. Hackman at your pre-op what his routine is on surgery day so you know what to expect. If he doesn’t plan to see you on one side or the other of surgery but you would like to see him, please request that. I feel it’s more comforting for a patient to see the surgeon before & after (even if patient is pretty groggy), but that’s my opinion.
Given my situation, I most definitely want to see Dr Hackman beforehand and Im pretty sure that I will, and from what Ive read, I think I will see him sometime afterwards? Afterwards isnt much of a big deal… it being Bi-Lateral, its kind of a one and done…
Im asking because I didnt see my Surgeon AT ALL with my 2nd Surgery… not PreOp, not in the OR, not PostOp… not even a Video Call for my Follow Up…
Im just trying to make ANY of this make sense…

Its OK… its done and over and lucky enough to be able to work with Dr Hackman for a Revision…
@MamaBear6 - Yeah, first two times around are certainly not the norm for doctor/patient relationship surrounding major surgery. From what I’ve heard, Dr. Hackman is more “user friendly”.
Dr Hackman is a really cool surgeon. However, before the surgery I saw him only in the OR, right before the anaesthesia was delivered.
In the pre-op room, I saw and chatted only with his assistant. After the surgery, in the evening and the morning next day only with his assistant surgeon too. The first time I saw Dr Hackman after the operation was a week later, at the post-op appointment.
I did not see Dr Hackman prior to going back for surgery except of course for the initial appointment I had with him. I saw one of the surgeons that would be in the room with him. He answered all my questions. Never saw Dr Hackman in the hospital afterwards either. It was the one thing I was disappointed with him about seeing as though I traveled quite a distance for the surgery. I just don’t think he has the time in between surgeries. He is a wonderful dr /surgeon however and I wouldn’t let that deter me from picking him.
I am just TERRIFIED considering EVERYTHING I am going through and have gone through!! I am traveling from Florida and my reason for asking is because my last Surgery, I didnt see the Surgeon AT ALL and there are just so many things that dont line up!!
You definitely have to have 100% trust in your surgeon. When I met with him at my initial appointment i immediately gained that trust in him that he was the right one for me. It’s not like I didn’t see a surgeon that was going to be in the room that day. If I didn’t then that would’ve been a problem for me. But I did and I felt very comfortable with him as well he was very easily able to answer all my questions. I truly trust you will not have any issues with Dr Hackman. He really is an amazing surgeon from my experience. However you have to do what makes you feel comfortable. There was another girl on here that demanded to see him and they brought him in.
I most definitely trust him!! I can say that, for sure!! He made me feel comfortable and he explained things to me very thorough… even things outside of just my Styloids and this Surgery in itself!!
My first Surgery, the Diagnosis, me being sick… everything was and is still so new to me… I was SOOO desperate for relief that I just settled for the first Surgeon that gave me a Surgery Date I think? Although I had read positive reviews about my first Surgeon, my case was just a VERY difficult case, and I think he just bit off more than he could chew in my opinion…
My surgeon came in to see me while I was waiting to go into the OR and so did the anesthesiologist to explain to me what he was going to do. Then, when I got into the OR and was being transferred to the OR table, the nurses and others prepping me for the surgery were there to reassure me and keep me calm. I was not worried because, I had placed my entire hope and life into the Great Physician who created me…I was blessed to have Dr. Runkle as my surgeon and I am now fine. No issues with the ES that I dealt with for 17 yrs. Life is better.
@MamaBear6 - Do you see Dr. Hackman for a pre-op appt? If so, tell him that you NEED to see him at some point on surgery day & give a preference as to whether before or after your surgery. Hopefully, he will comply, even if it’s a quick visit.
I dont think so… My Surgery is on a Monday… I will be getting my Phone Call on the Friday before about my Scheduled time and we are flying in on the 18th… I am still trying to figure out where to stay that evening before the Surgery and which day I should day I should fly back Home… Im beginning to get a bit overwhelmed…
@MamaBear6 - There is some type of lower cost housing for people coming from out of state for surgery that I think UNC is affiliated with. If I remember correctly, @Ddmarie stayed there when she saw Dr. Hackman for surgery.

Thanks for tagging me! Yes, there are cheaper discounts that you can get for hotel stays! The number is 1-877-633-8729. When you call just tell them you are being seen at UNC. They ask you a few additional questions but nothing crazy. Saved a ton of money it was a 4th of what we would’ve paid. And if they don’t mention a place that you are wanting to stay just tell them where you want to stay and they will give you a discount on that. We stayed at the Tru we like it.
