Hi to all

Thank you for the report. Your incision looks very nice & neat. Not surprised you’re sore! It’s pretty extensive. You’ll feel much better once the drain is removed. :hugs:

@theFury Wow, that’s quite an incision! Wishing you the best in your recovery journey.

Wow, that’s a longer incision than he usually does, but a 6cm styloid is quite a beast! I found the drip was the worst part, it was so annoying & couldn’t sleep at all, hope you’ve had a decent night… Take care, sleep and rest propped up if you can & ice your neck if you can avoid the incision… Can you eat okay or is your mouth too stiff?
Praying that this helps your symptoms, keep us posted with your recovery if you can :folded_hands:

Hi.

I was on so much morphine I don’t have a clue :joy:

I’m eating ok. No problems at all so far but my eyes are are a bit sketchy which is strange and a little niggly sharp pain behind my right eye which is a new one. I think I have a bit of a head cold as I’m getting dark brown gloopy jelly off my throat and my sinuses.

Yuck about having a cold so soon after surgery! I hope it passes quickly. Your eyes may be responding to all the meds you had for surgery & immediately afterward as they can hang around for several days post op before being completely excreted plus the adjustment to a new blood flow level out of your brain.

We’ve noted that “cross-over” symptoms can occur w/ ES so your right eye pain is possibly in response to something that’s changed on the left. I hope it goes away quickly, but if it doesn’t, be sure to contact either Mr. Axon or your PCP to be safe.

I’m having some crazy ringing and popping in the ear and the nerve tingling around where he cut. Hoping that is signs of the nerves repairing. :folded_hands:

You’ll likely have many unexpected & unusual symptoms as your nerves heal over the course of the next year. However, you should notice it less & less as you get to 2, 4 & 6 months post op or maybe even earlier.

Ear popping likely has to do w/ your IJV being opened up & having better blood flow through your IJV. Tinnitus can come & go, too, while the brain/body get used to the new level of blood flow. Unfortunately, tinnitus symptoms are the ones that are the most unpredictable regarding whether they will leave after surgery or not. Hope always springs eternal & often they at least settle down to some degree but it can take quite a number of months.

Yes, nerves do do weird things while they’re healing… I hope you fight off the cold or whatever you have… I’m glad that you can eat, take care :folded_hands:

Hi @IJVman I can confirm I received a quote for left Styloidectomy & C1 shave with Mr Axon privately at the Nuffield for just over £14700. I am currently waiting for the operation under the NHS with Mr Axon at Addenbrookes.

Wow. That’s nearly £5 more than the styloidectomy? :face_with_peeking_eye:

Hi Rosie.

I’m not sure how I feel to be honest. I’ve had a terrible cold since the op. I feel drained. I have nerve pain around my pectoral on the outside on the same side as the styloidectomy. My eyes are struggling to focus too. Just drained and lethargic.

That’s rough having a cold on top- even now after surgery I find I get more neck pain if I get a cold or any other virus, so it’s likely making all your symptoms worse as well as slowing recovery from the surgery… I hope it improves soon :folded_hands:

@theFury - I’m sorry the cold got a firm foothold. I hope your body can beat it soon so you can start noticing the benefits of your surgery. Just take it easy & doing whatever helps you feel most comfortable (like resting!). Don’t for get to use those ice packs if your neck is sore & sleeping with head elevation may even help cold symptoms lessen.

I wish a speedy recovery for you both from your cold & surgery! :heart_with_ribbon:

Okay, wow - that’s alot. Thanks for sharing.

They called me from Nuffield and said they couldn’t do anything for me without an UK address. I think "cambridgehear"something is the only place foreigners can get through to him, but the online consulation alone costs £750 apparently… So at the moment very much considering just skipping and going to Turkey / Dr. Kamran

Did you consider other doctors? I guess I wouldn’t have considered others if I was from the UK myself.

Hi. I went through Cambridge hear. I did have other options but I chose Mr Axon from recommendation. I’m glad I did to be honest. He was very good and the whole experience with the Nuffield was first class.

Makes sense, good to hear!

Can i ask what he/they do for the “nervemonitoring” part of the surgery, if any?

Because that is my biggest fear with going to Turkey where my understanding is that they accept irritated nerves (as it will be temporary) and that they don’t do anything special to monitor the nerves (an extra doctor to monitor etc.)

Mr Axon monitors the facial nerve during surgery, I can’t recall anyone mentioning facial weakness from a damaged nerve after surgery with him, but could be wrong. He does warn about possible stress to the facial and spinal accessory nerves before he does the surgery as some of the risks. I had numbness along my jaw & around my ear , not particularly bad though, that seems to be common. It’s nearly all gone, just a little patch 10 years on! But worth it to have the styloids out!

Hi all. I had a styloidectomy a few weeks ago and to be honest I’ve felt no better.
Is it plausible that people who have or are being diagnosed with eagles and being treated for eagles without treating the cause?

Throughout my journey I have carried out so much research I could have completed another PhD :face_with_peeking_eye:.

Totally anecdotal however, I am leaning towards the cause of my completely ossified stylohyoid ligaments, is instability in the C1, C2 area, the stylohyoid ligaments acted to strengthen the neck and head.

I have so many questions which I cannot seem to find the answers to.

The next port of call for myself is a digital motion X ray, an osteopath who deals with CCI with POTS, EDS etc and understands this area and possibly neck and back support.

Have a read of this article below. I feel some may find answers to your journey.
