How did it start?

This information is not meant to scare you but to inform you. One more positive regarding the extraoral approach: My hypoglossal nerve was wrapped around my right styloid & had to be unwrapped from the styloid before the styloid could be shortened. Even with the care my doctor took, the right side of my tongue was basically paralyzed for about 6 months. It took close to a year for it to return to normal. If my surgeon had done my surgery intraorally, he would not have seen the nerve & would mostly likely have cut it which would have caused permanent tongue paralysis. This problem actually happened to someone in Australia who used to be on this site and has left him with speaking difficulties.

Thank you so much for all the information. I have made an appointment on friday in another clinic to hear a second oppinion. I chose the ENT-section there as i know they have operated extraorally before, also it seems that the jawpeople prefer intraorally while ENT’s prefer extraorally. Let’s see what they say.

It’s great that you’re able to get another opinion- that way you can go into surgery confident that you’ve made the right decision! Let us know how you get on with the next appt!

best of luck with your surgery !

Update: Went for a second opinion last week and they pretty much confirmed everything and said it made sense to try the intraoral aproach first. So i decided to have the surgery as planned. Will have another pre-surgery meeting tomorrow, surgery is scheduled for thursday next week.

I had a good nearly painfree episode for almost a month but since last week the pain came back worse than ever before. Especially when turning head and swallowing. Ugh, looking forward to have the surgery, im sure it cant get worse at least.

Will let you know about any news on my case.

The hospital is “Heidberg Klinik” in Hamburg/Germany. They have done the surgery many times before. Also “Uni Klinik” in Lübeck/Germany does it a few times per year.

Good luck Benyon!! Please keep us posted on how you’re doing when you can.

Who is the doctor who is doing the surgery? We don’t have anyone on the Doctors List from Germany so it’s great to find out somewhere where they have experience with Eagles.

Hope it all goes well! There’s lots of info on here about what to expect with surgery and tips to help you prepare, if you’ve not already had a look. (In the Newbies section, E Info- surgery, or you can just search the discussions)
