I went to the ENT after my neck CT

Hello all. I went to a specialist in Dallas and he said my lingual tonsils are HUGE. Has anyone heard of this? Im scheduled for surgery in June. Could all of this be related to my lingual tonsil hypertrophy?

Hi @Mutedsensation - Welcome to our forum! The lingual tonsils have come up on our forum before. Here’s a link to one discussion where hypertrophic lingual tonsils led to an ES diagnosis but there are other mentions of it which you can search by clicking on the magnifying glass search tool in the upper right & typing “lingual tonsils” in the search box.

Dr. Eagle (for whom ES is named) thought that styloid elongation/stylohyoid ligament calcification was caused by the pressure scar tissue from a tonsillectomy placed on the styloids/s-h ligaments which in turn caused the body to “reinforce” the styloids/s-h ligaments by laying down extra calcium in the area. His theory has since been proven wrong in that it’s not only scar tissue that can cause the body to react that way. My point here is that if your lingual tonsils are exceedingly large, it’s possible they’ve been putting pressure on the soft tissues around the styloids which has caused your body to “reinforce” the styloids thus creating the symptoms of ES.

Is your June surgery only for a tonsillectomy or for both a styloidectomy & tonsillectomy?
