So here is a little update since I haven’t posted in awhile. Dr. Moore was willing to do the surgery but I wanted to get a second opinion( he wasn’t 100%) I flew to Columbus Ohio to see dr. Brad DeSilva. ( I wanted to see doctor Forrest but was told he is retiring but dr. DeSilva has a lot of experience) I do have to say from the very first phone call it was a very pleasant experience. He is an excellent doctor along with all of his staff. Very nice compassionate people.
He said even though he can’t tell on my CT scan that there’s anything wrong with my hyoid, by palpating it he said he could feel that it is in fact very close to my carotid as well as it’s rubbing against my spine. I have a very thin neck and a very thick , long hyoid bone, as he was moving it he could also hear it pop. He said I am a candidate for the surgery. For those who have unexplainable neck pain, face pain, jaw , ear , sinus pain but don’t have eagle syndrome please research hyoid bone syndrome. I was convinced I had Eagles because of all my symptoms ( minus pain during swallowing, only weird sensation while drinking) I think I’m going to schedule surgery and then I’ll write an update.

Glad Dr. DeSilva was as nice in person as I experienced over the phone. I found Ohio State to be very organized and everyone I spoke to was very professional and helpful, even though it was over the phone. Dr. DeSilva helped me to get into Mayo in AZ - as it is much closer to home for me and when I was talking to Ohio State it was winter - an even harder time to travel there. I am sure you will be in good hands. Best of luck!

Glad you’ve found a doctor you feel confident with! Will he shorten the cornu both sides or just one, & did he talk much about results? We’ve had a few members with hyoid bone syndrome rather than ES, but not had much feedback after their surgery.
Let us know when you get a date so we can be praying for you!

That makes me feel good. Thank you for sharing!! I feel pretty good about him

Hes only going to shorten the painful side, but I am starting to get pain on the other side so he did mention it might be necessary to shorten the other side in the future. He said I should get immediate results and should recover rather quickly (2 weeks) but he did mention 2 of his patients didn’t get full relief. But I’m staying positive! Thank you!!

Hi Kaska!

So glad you’ve found a great doctor & that he’s & his staff have been supportive! Two weeks sounds like a pretty quick healing time for what will be somewhat of a major surgery. I suspect as w/ ES surgeries, you’ll feel ok by two weeks post op, but it will take a month or two for you to get back to feeling top notch.

I hope that having the first side done will help correct the second side so that surgery on the other side isn’t necessary in the future. I too hope for complete healing of your symptoms.

Please do let us know about your surgery date & keep us in the loop about how your recovery goes.

:hugs:

Thank you for letting me know that. I can’t get discouraged if after two weeks I’m still in pain, I’m guessing from the swelling as well. I got my surgery scheduled July 23rd. I can hardly wait. I can’t even imagine that this nightmare could be over soon. Thank you all so much for your thoughts and for all your help. If it wasn’t for this forum I would still be looking for answers. I will definitely update !

Kaska -

Thank you for letting us know your surgery date. That’s fantastic that you’re scheduled so soon! I’m also glad you found this forum & we’ve been helpful & supportive for you.

Please let us know how you’re doing post op. We’re here to encourage you & keep you moving toward healing!

I’ll put your surgery day on my calendar & pray for you then.

:hugs:

Thank you :heart::heart::heart:

Not too long to wait, I hope that the time passes quickly for you!

Where in the body are we supposed to get the shot injected? Thanks!

Well I don’t have eagle syndrome, I have hyoid bone syndrome and in my case the shot was a local anesthetic and cortisone to resection of the greater cornu of hyoid bone.

Hi tatianac -

The shots are usually ultrasound guided & given in the neck in the area where the styloid process is. I haven’t had one so hopefully someone else will reply w/ more specifics.

Thanks for the reply Kaska! Wishing you the best!

So I just had my surgery today with Dr Desilva in Columbus. Just wanted to post a little update. The surgery went well. The doctor took out about 2 1/2 to 3 in of my hyoid bone. He thinks I have a small neck and the bone was elongated and thick and pressing on carotid and cranial nerves. Right now I’m just very sore in that area and it’s very painful to swallow as to be expected. As far as the doctor and the whole staff I was so impressed with how nice and caring they were. Now I’m just praying this helps. I will post an update in a few. Thank you all for your support and kind words especially Isaiah and Julie:heart::heart::heart:
