Professional Singer Diagnosed with Eagle Syndrome - Surgery with Dr. Cognetti November 5th 2021

Well done for fighting your corner so hard to get the surgery funded! There have been several discussions by members/ singers about vocal changes you might find helpful to search for; nobody knows unfortunately which symptoms will go with surgery, so can’t guarantee how your voice will be after surgery, but most members have a definite improvement in their symptoms with time! I was worried about the risks too, but with an experienced surgeon (which Dr Cognetti is) the risks are lessened.
I didn’t find the recovery too painful, but it does very depending on surgical techniques, and which nerves are affected by the styloids. Most people can speak normally after external surgery, but it can get painful if you do lots of talking. Some members have gone back to desk work/ working from home after a week, but usually it’s longer. I was doing voluntary work, but it did involve lifting toddlers so I needed a good 4 weeks before I could do that, & driving was uncomfortable for 3 weeks after my first surgery, but often people are okay before that. I think your voice will need a rest before singing though, but hopefully you should be able to get back to songwriting quickly.
Not had fibroids removed, but did have two C-sections, & it’s on a par I think- but I didn’t find that too bad either! ES surgery was certainly easier than I expected. There are lost of discussions if you search for ‘what to expect after surgery’ you’ll see others’ experiences. MusicGeek had surgery a few years ago; she was also a professional musician & singer & wrote alot about her journey, here’s a link to one discussion:
Are there any saxophonist or wind musicians out there? - General - Living with Eagle
There’s also a ‘surgery shopping list’ you can look for with some ideas of things to get ready for recovery; a wedge pillow is a good idea as you’ll need to sleep semi upright for a good week, maybe more afterwards to help with swelling. You might find chewing uncomfortable for a week so smoothies & soft foods might be needed. Not sure where you’ll be staying, what you’ll be able to take? Others have given tips about flying after surgery so have a search for those too.
Will make a note of your surgery date, & will pray for you
