Just wanted to share this paper I came across that was published this year:
Researchers showed that extracranial venous compression (i.e., compression of venous structures outside of the skull) can directly result in oscillating vertigo - feeling of rocking, bobbing, swaying. They showed that two compression locations of the IJV can cause the vertigo - (1) between styloid and C1 transverse process (i.e., ES), and (2) underneath the SCM muscle. They also showed that the compression of the subclavian vein at the thoracic outlet can also cause the vertigo. The 6 patients presented in the paper underwent surgeries to address their compression areas and all saw improvement.
Oscillating vertigo has been a daily nightmare of mine for the past year. It just so happens that I have IJV compression (bilaterally) at both the level of C1/styloid and SCM. I’ve attached my imaging below. I hope this post can help those experiencing vertigo find answers. I’m always happy to look at your imaging (not a radiologist, but passionate).
Very interesting paper, @TML. I continue to be amazed by how proactive you’ve been in learning to read your own CTs & diagnose your symptoms so you can have a truly educated discussion w/ Dr. Cognetti & any other doctors with whom you speak about your symptoms & causes. Plus what you now know about CT scans has been a tremendous benefit to our forum members. Thank you!!
Thanks @TML , I’m going to take a look at this today. With respect to your vertigo, is it specifically spinning or twirling sensation in visual field? Or more just wooziness/imbalance feeling?
By the way I have been trying to get my CT to you, but Elysian does not actually privide download through the site you showed me. I’ll find a way to get it though.
I feel off balance like my ears aren’t adjusting to space properly. And not sure if it’s what’s causing my eye focus and oscillating problems or not. I suspect it is.
A few months ago I did a 10 minute walk on a treadmill, and once I got off I felt like I was still on it for weeks after. Took an elevator rode a month or so ago and I felt like I was still on it for a couple weeks. I think my eyes are oscillating with my pulse, but then get even more disorientated after one of these motion events. Car is fine though. Based on this paper, IJV compression is causing these symptoms.
And oh interesting, AI on google search lied to me lol. Hopefully you can access the imaging somewhere else!
