I fully agree and will have it checked.
They definitely smoothed cut edges off. Would be probably life-threatening otherwise.
Had a talk with the surgeon and I aksed him everything. I’m thinking it was technically perfect, but with the different approach of cutting down SP only to the first attachment.
The first surgery, where only the lig. S-h were removed partly, I would have had never done, if they had told me from the beginning that they would not touch the styloids.
(Complicated sentence, hope it’s correct and you can understand my bit rusty English.)
Your English is better than that of many native speakers, TheDude. Please don’t apologize. I do understand what you are saying.
Regarding the smoothing off of the styloids/ligaments after shortening them, there are doctors who either break them externally & leave the sharp pieces floating in the neck & tell their patients they are “cured” or who “snip the tip” off the styloids & sew the patients back up w/o caring for the sharp tip(s) left behind. In both these situations, the patients generally need surgery or revision surgery later.
Yes that scar looks great for 10 weeks out!
Im about 20 weeks out now and gradually getting better as far as jaw and ear pain on the surgery side. I just scheduled the other side for surgery in early December. Dec 7th to be exact if anyone wants to join in a surgery party that week.
I am definately starting to notice little symptoms crop up on the other side. I know the other side is longer and I suspect may be attached to hyoid or close to it based on the sounds and feelings when I rotate neck and different angles. Yesterday I noticed some ringing in the ear. None of this is anywhere near as problematic as the extreme pain I was having on other side before surgery. What is so strange is that the side that is still there has a few times had some pretty bad pain flairs and actually started on that side but shifted to other side the past couple years. I gotta wonder why that side has improved. I wonder if something shifted in there?
I was leaning towards putting this off because of jaw /ear pain but now that it has substantially improved I am going ahead with other side. Im trying to shift jobs and if I am successful, I may push surgery up because I am feeling so much better. Ive almost met my co-insurance limit and my current employer reimburses for it so why not?
Oooh @Snapple2020- early Dec is likely the very earliest I could get in for my surgery with Dr. Hepworth. It will likely be later due to his scheduling, but if I get lucky and can get an earlier surgery date, I’ll have a surgery party with you. Mine will likely be late Dec/early Jan at this point.
LOL. Im sure there will be a group of us given its the end of year and many of us have met deductibles for the year. Anybody who is int hat boat should be scheduling December surgeries now as they start booking up fast going into October. Im sure COVID has also caused a back up in surgeries as well. I’m doing mine with Dr. Samji and will be traveling to San Jose and will do a 10 day stay. I was hoping some other people needing surgery will come at same time. We could all recover together in the same hotel!
Good for you for recognizing something is not right & pushing for an answer. Self-advocation is the way to go. I’m so sorry you’re looking at another round of surgery, but as we’ve noted on here many times, it’s not always the length of the styloid that causes problems, but a normal length styloid that is very thick, angled, twisted or pointed can also create ES symptoms. You definitely fall into that category.
Please push your surgeon to cut the styloid back to the skull base if possible. My surgical report said I had a partial “mastoidectomy”. That means a little bit of the mastoid bone of my skull was removed in order to make sure the styloid was completely gone. The styloid process attaches to the mastoid process portion of the skull.
