Surgery with Dr.O’Connell from Alberta

Hi,:wave:t3:. I have vascular Eagle syndrome and have been suffering for a decade. I also think I have a CSF Leaks. I’ve been trying to get help for a very long time and I’m trying to get down to Dr. Hepworth but the wait list is quite long. I have bilateral elongated styloid, the right side is also blocked by thrombosis and there’s no flow, the left side is pinched off but there’s still some flow. I found Dr. O’Connell I had a conversation with him and he is willing to do surgery on my left styloid and completely remove it during surgery from the outside. She was very kind however my concern is he’s only done 12 in the last 5 to 6 years. I am a very complicated case. I am looking for any and all of your experiences with Dr. Dan O’Connell from Alberta. If you could please share your experience with me that would
Be greatly appreciated. He says the wait list is 4 months approx.

Thanks

Hopefully one of the Canadian members will chip in with their experience, in the mean time you can use the search function to look his name up & see members’ experiences, here’s a couple of discussions:

The Canadian health care system seems to be really difficult to get treatment for ES so that could be why he’s not done many surgeries…The only thing I would caution you about is that as far as I’m aware Dr O’ Connell does intra-oral surgeries, which means it’s harder to see as much of the styloid process, & not as much can be removed. With vascular ES that’s not such a good plan for surgery, as much needs to be removed as possible & the surgeon needs to see as much as possible of the blood vessels.
Hope this is helpful!

Hi Jules
I typed in his name and this conversation did t show up, however I did directly send a message to someone that has had surgery by him. When I spoke to him he said he would do the surgery going through the neck. A little scary if he has not done that before!

It’s a tricky decision that only you can make with how confident you feel in his abilities, but to have external surgery for vascular ES is definitely a better option if he’s prepared to do this…it’s so frustrating that you have so few options in Canada

Yes so very frustrating!

I wrote an answer to your post in another discussion before I saw this one.

It may be that Dr. O’Connell has done more than one external surgery. It’s just that we only know of members who’ve had intraoral surgery done by him. If he told you he can do it, he is likely competent to do so. If I were you, I’d book a surgical date but perhaps also have a conversation with one of the US docs I mentioned in my other response.
