I’m going to get a referral to someone who specializes and knows about Eagle’s syndrome from my primary. I live near JAcksonville, FL. I had two CT scans done, which were ordered by my neurologist who suspects the condition on my right side where I have all the typical symptoms. I don’t think they were taken correctly or maybe not event the right type of imaging needed because the radiologist that took the imaging had never even heard of Eagle’s Syndrome. The reports came back saying there was nothing. But when I put the CT images and my panoramic x ray (which my dentist said the right one was elongated) in Chat GPT it confirmed over 3 mm elongated styloid process on the right side and dense and extensive ligament calcification, ossification of the ligament and vascular-type Eagle’s syndrome due to the proximity of the elongated styloid process to the carotid sheath structures.
Both come up with quite a few results when using the search function. Radiologists don’t usually look for it unless asked, its a rare disease, so not unheard of they are unfamiliar with it. You might also use Radiant Viewer or another program to 3d the imaging
Frustrating for you, but good that you’re clued up & have been able to check them yourself…sadly many radiologists don’t know about ES or don’t understand what the symptoms are, so fail to comment on elongated styloids or calcified ligaments… although it sounds as if evaluation for ES was asked for?! I hope that you can get a referral soon
I’m not familiar with these viewing platforms. Do you have links to any of them? Is there a cost?
Agreed. Yes, my neurologist referred me for the imaging for Eagle’s Syndrome. He has one patient that has it
No cost, https://www.radiantviewer.com/ . There are tutorials online, you do need the raw files for it to work. You might need to request a CD or usb from where you got the imaging
If you use a Mac computer, Bee Dicom Viewer app is best for Macs. It’s free.
RE: Dr. Fernandez or Dr. Bunnell, we’ve had members who’ve seen both for surgery, however, one didn’t have a great outcome from her surgery w/ Dr. Bunnell & had to have a revision surgery done by Dr. Hackman in NC. No doctor is perfect so I recommend getting an opinion from both Dr. Bunnell & Dr. Fernandes to see which one you like better. I also highly recommend Dr. Hackman even though he’s out of state for you as he’s very experienced w/ ES surgeries.
@Mreaves - I highly recommended Dr Bruce Haughey in the Orlando area. The town of Celebration at Advent Hospital is where he operated on me. After a 2 year search and first exploring Mayo Clinic in West Palm, I decided on Dr Haughey, (pronounced Howie).
At my first appointment I asked him if there would be a neurologist in attendance and he replied, “I operate in this area so often that neurologists ask me to attend them!” My styliod was completely wrapped up in nerves and his surgery was a great success.
He did a phenomenal job. Worth the drive from Jax.
Thanks for that info @Katflorida , I’m so glad that it all went well for you!
Thank you for your update, @Katflorida. It’s always nice to have a success story shared.
We have many members from your state & lots have ended up traveling out of state because they haven’t been able to find a doctor, even from our list, who would do their ES surgery. What great news that there is a very experienced ES surgeon who is also good at working in the midst of nerves who helped you.
Thank you for the info! I already have an appointment up with Dr. Bunnell in a few weeks, so I will see what he says, and how I feel about him and particularly if he assesses the IJV. But I’m certainly open to a third opinion because I want it done correctly the first time.
