AO After Styloid/C1 Shave

For those with CCI who underwent styloid removal/c1 shave- how long were you told to wait before continuing again with therapies such as AO (upper cervical atlas orthogonal)? I understand recovery from the surgery takes time- but if anyone was given a guide that would be much appreciated- thanks.

If no one responds to your question, I would wait at least 8 weeks post op before considering AO therapies. Consulting w/ the AO chiropractor for his/her opinion would also be a good idea, but if (s)he tells you anything less than two months, please err on the side of caution & wait. It’s best not to do too much in the way of somewhat aggressive therapy until the swelling is mostly gone.

Thanks! this surgery is quite new here in AU so the post op guidelines have not been great. Appreciate your help

In UK only Atlas Orthagonal practitioner here told me post fusion that adjustment of Atlas would not be possible post fusion. But he could still help with other treatment options. I agree that at least 2 months post op recovery is needed and most practitioners will have minimum periods post surgery before willing to treat a patient. D

I was warned that my AO will no longer adjust me. Though I have been doing some research and have been doing some strengthening exercises and I had held the longest I have ever held-4 weeks. When I thought my surgery was approaching I was worried, so I tried to get a heads start to hopefully avoid problems with neck weakness. I didn’t want the time I was recovering to be worsened by neck weakness. Getting into a routine with strengthening has been a positive learning experience that pt never addressed and I still feel ignored and made worse.

Thanks- which AO advised of that ? x

My experience with PTs is also not great. My understanding is leaning toward that they just go to the PT school and then apply the “script” for various types of injuries. Same as any speciality - there are people who end up just applying the “algorithm”, and then there are those rare who properly and deeply understand underlying principles of biomechanics and can tailor the treatment protocol to your specific needs.

I have not found a competent PT yet or had been my own research from the top CCI Drs. I seems to help somewhat

@lilwider I just looked up Dr. DiMaio. Is he in network with any insurance companies?

No unfortunately, out of pocket
