Barium swallow test completely normal, but it was the hardest task of my life

Just venting, frustrated seeking answers. I have been on a goose chase as you probably have seen from my posts. I have thought I have been making progress as I finally got a pro bono appt with Dr M Shohet the most renowned Dr for eagle syndrome in New York City. After assessing me, he said my styloids that although 4 cm are not “gnarly enough” and said my swallowing issue and pain in my throat, will not go away from a stlyioectomy and to get a barium swallow test. The Barium swallow was physically the hardest test of my life. I told the gal countless times can we slow down or I can’t or I need water. After the test she told me I have aniexty and maybe I’m just scared of food becuase when I was struggling showed during the replay- it was revealed it was before the food even entered my throat- a REVELATION to me. I went to a throat specialist before and there was nothing wrong with me, and a previous Ent had to remove food from my throat. I truly believe my styliod is pressing on my Vagus nerve causing all of this- alongside with my horrific headaches neck and upper back pain, tinnitus and sometimes random blurry vision. If anyone has any advice I’d be so grateful.

@Gaby - I am so sorry for what you’ve gone through & how you were treated!! :scream:

I’ve never heard of Dr. Shohet. Who told you he’s the most reknown doctor for ES in NYC? I think we would have heard of him here if he was that good as this forum has been going since 2010 & there have been quite a number of members from NY.

With the symptoms you have, you should see Dr. Costantino, in White Plains, NY, as it sounds like you may also have internal jugular vein compression being caused by your styloids, & he does the surgery to help decompress the IJVs & shorten the styloids.

I totally agree w/ you that your styloids are likely playing a significant role in your swallowing problems. I can’t believe the barium swallow tech gaslit you the way she did & that Dr. Shohet blew you off for not having “gnarly” styloids.

As we’ve said over & over again on here, the styloids don’t even need to be elongated to be causing symptoms as they can have other physical features besides elongation that can affect nerves & local blood vessels i.e. being very thick, curved, angled, twisted, pointed, having bumps or outgrowths on them, etc. If Dr. Shohet was really “in the know” about ES he would have looked for other characteristics of your styloids besides their length (4 cm is plenty long enough to cause problems) to determine how they might be causing your symptoms.

We’ll be happy to look at any imaging you have if you want to share it here as we often see things that radiologists miss or dismiss as not being of consequence when they truly are. Please bear in mind we aren’t doctors so nothing we tell you can be considered diagnostic. It can be used in discussion with your doctor though. Please remove any personal info on images you post to protect your privacy. Alternatively, you can put your images in a Google Drive folder & send the via PM to @TML who has helped a great number of our members understand what their imaging shows by annotating both aixal views & 3D images.

radiantviewer.com (for PCs) or Bee Dicom Viewer App (for Macs) are useful tools for converting your CT imaging into 3D images which will help you better see what’s going on in your neck.

I’m sorry that you were dismissed like that! Unfortunately radiologists & many ENTs are ignorant about ES symptoms & the styloids too- some doctors think that 4cms is not long enough to cause symptoms, where the average is about 2.5cms! We know that the thickness and angle can play a part too, & there are research papers which back this up. So hopefully as @Isaiah_40_31 says, you can get treatment from a different doctor, I’ve never heard Dr Shohet either!
