In my case i have both, so it is very difficult to figure out what is causing the symptoms? The hyoid or the styloid…
You may never have a “for sure” answer, @Hema, especially if both surgeries occur w/in one surgery. Is Mr. Hughes doing a bilateral styloidectomy as well as the hyoid resection or will you get only one styloid shortened & go back to have the second one done? What you’ve said so far sounds like bilateral styloidectomy plus hyoid resection.
Yes he said partially cutting both styloids and hyoid resection in one surgery.
That will be a tough surgery to recover from, but I can understand getting it all done in one go…I would make sure that you ask about swelling & what Mr Hughes will suggest for that (drains or steroids are commonly used?)
Yes I feel very stressed about it but trying to remain as calm as i can? What does a drain do?
Drains are soft tubes sewn into the surgical incision which help reduce post op swelling by allowing excess fluid to drain out after surgery. They are usually removed within a few days post op. Some doctors use this system & others prefer to prescribe a course of steroids to help with the swelling in throat & neck after this type of surgery. In some cases both the drains & later a course of steroids are necessary.
@Hema - even though recovery will be rough at first, you’ll be really glad later that you had it all done at once. I hoped for that but my surgeon refused so I hd to have 2 surgeries. Get yourself several (3-4) small gel ice packs to use for icing your neck after surgery. They’ll help a lot to reduce pain & swelling.

Thank you Leah. I shall have a good look through this one. For sure.
Please let me know where the list is for MDs that take care of the hyoid surgery,
