I’m sorry to hear that. I just had a 1.5 cm portion removed intraorally via tonsillectomy on my left side which is the one that was causing me symptoms. I’m still waiting to see if any of my symtoms are resolved. The condition was not discovered until the surgery so I don’t have any idea how long my styloid was prior but will be working on gathering that info. I was interested in your experience with Dr. Hernandez since I live in Louisiana. Do you have any plans to follow up with him or any other doctors that you have found in Lousiana?
I had a great experience with Dr. Hernandez. He is a great doctor. I would recommend him. I have an appointment with him later this month. A video appointment, since I’m unable to travel at the moment. I’m going to let him know I’m still experiencing some symptoms and see if he can do anything. The bad thing about this surgery is that there is always a chance that some won’t experience relief, and if so it can be very little. I think i was told about 80 percent have relief. I hope that yours will help. You are still very early on in recovery it seems, so I hope you feel better once healed.
Hi anichols,
In cases of bilateral ES, it’s not uncommon for the styloid that hasn’t been resected to start causing or continue causing pain after the first side is removed. Symptoms from the remaining styloid can gradually worsen over time until it’s removed/shortened. I had this experience. It was no fun healing from one side while the other was driving me nuts. In the end having both removed is what gave me the great results I ended up with.
Your remaining styloid may be causing cross-over pain i.e. it could be helping stimulate the pain you’re still feeling on the post op side. This happens in some cases. That said, it can also take 6+months post op for nerves to heal enough that symptoms disappear significantly. Since your remaining symptoms sound fairly significant, It would be a good idea to talk to Dr. Hernandez about Rxing a nerve pain medication such as Gabapentin or Amitriptyline to help take the edge off your current pain. This might allow your body to heal more completely from the first surgery.
I do hope your body continues to heal & will pray for that.
I do agree with Isaiah- we’ve had members with cross over symptoms, weird things going on…sometimes members have found that the doctor won’t so the second side as the first surgery didn’t help them much, but have gone on to have good results when they’ve been able to get surgery with someone else (not meaning you shouldn’t have surgery with Dr Hernandez, if he’s willing he sounds like like a good doctor, just be prepared that sometimes doctors can refuse, don’t think I’m explaining myself very well!!) it’s worth still having the second side done if you can & hopefully everything will settle. Thinking of you…
How are you feeling now? Are you feeling any better? And does Dr. Hernandez remove the skull base? I see that you mentioned he only does intraoral so I was curious if he removes the whole thing. I was trying to see Dr.Nuss myself but they said he’s not seeing Eagles patients anymore. So I was curious if it’s worth making an appointment with Dr. Hernandez. I hope your tongue is feeling better❤️
How are you doing ? Dr hernandez is my Dr too.I have my 2nd appt on aug 22, after my Ct scan .
We’ve had very mixed stories about Dr. Nuss doing or not doing ES surgery. He has done it for several of our members who’ve all had good results, but it seems people who’ve contacted his ofc between times get told he’s no longer doing ES surgeries. It may be a matter of getting past a front desk person who isn’t properly informed. One member, @Calebp, was told Dr. Nuss didn’t do ES surgery anymore, but he got a call back (maybe from Dr Nuss himself?) saying he is still doing ES surgery so Calebp went ahead & had surgery w/ Dr. Nuss
You could try sending Calebp a PM to discuss his experience by clicking on his screen name as it appears above one of his posts.
Thank you so much. it truly has been hard getting through to them. They truly just block it and won’t even let me leave a message with his nurse lol I wonder if I’ll just get a new referral for maybe something sinus related? Although they told me he’s just only there a few days a month now so I think it matters on getting someone different to speak with like you said. And I will definitely message Caleb. Thank you❤️
You made a good suggestion & that is to make an appt w/ Dr. Nuss for something other than ES then address ES w/ him once you get to see him. There was a time in the past where he was out of his office for quite awhile. I think someone who saw him abt that time said he was taking care of one of his parents. I was glad to know that was important to him. ![]()
I agree 100%. He seems like a really good person and it’s very sweet that he took care of a family member instead of working. that makes me want to see him more lol I guess I’ll try to get a new referral for possibly sinus issues. I’m not sure. Thank you so much for your help🥰
