Longterm consequences for singers

Hi SaaMee,

I am reaching out as I sing in a men’s A Cappella chorus and have elongated styloids. The left one is palpable under the edge of my jaw and is also protruding into my throat above my tonsil. Anyway, I have noticed recently that after I rehearse for 30 minutes or more I start feeling a tingling on the left side of my face. When it gets really bad it can be felt from the top of my head down to the middle of my chin. It is most noticeable and annoying around my eye socket. I have no real pain associated with it but more of a light burning might be how to describe it. I’m curious if you or other ES singers experience this sensation. Thanks.

Hi! Yes I experienced those symptoms but it faded after surgery. Nowadays so many years after surgery I don’t feel that Eagles or the surgery affects my singing. Wishing you all the best! /Sanna

Adding my 2 cents. I’m only 1 month out from Intra Oral and my voice has already returned to about 90%. Right now it’s the scar tissue making the back of my throat tight that is the biggest hurdle, but my vocal chords were not affected. My range remains, but I can feel some of the strength being annoyed by the scar tissue. Nothing major. I can focus and get around it. I have been (without permission) gently massaging the area to hopefully loosen some of the tissue. Also sticking my tongue out, stretching it etc to keep things moving. Not professional, but my singing voice was a major concern of mine going into this. So far, I’ve been surprised that the surgical area seems somewhat removed from my voice.

Thank you for sharing your update, @Bvred . I’m really glad you’ve mostly got your singing voice back already! That’s great healing progress. I don’t see anything wrong with you massaging the back of your throat gently to help the scar tissue to relax. I hope the last 10% of your voice returns over the next 4 weeks. Please update us periodically. We love to hear good surgery success stories here!
