Very entertaining article, lifeowner! Thank you for including it in your post. There was at least one member on this forum who went to an ENT in search of treatment after being diagnosed w/ ES. He stuck his hand in her mouth & broke both of her elongated styloids & told her she was “fixed”. She was appalled that he would be so bold without telling her what he was doing. She had anticipated having them surgically removed. She stopped posting after this (or I missed any future posts she made) so I don’t know if her pain was relieved or not. I recall that after the styloid fracture she was in much more pain than before so the fracturing may be helpful for some people but not others. The downside to this approach is that it does leave the broken piece of styloid to loose in the space where it “lives”, & it’s possible it could settle in a location or at an angle that creates worse pain/problems.
Yesterday I had anesthetic infiltration through the mouth in the right tonsillar fossa and externally to the stylohioid cartilage. Some pains disappeared instant, pharyngeal embarrassment, right ear pain, parotid pain.
But cervical pain, right shoulder pain , deltoid, and trapezus pain have persisted.
Unfortunately, it all lasted very little 5 -6 hours and in the morning I woke up with the same pain: - ((
Lymph nodes remained swollen , jugulodigastric , submandibular etc…
I will see my ENT again tuesday on 15.03 .
I guess it’s helpful in that you know what is causing some of the pain, & can make decisions based on that, but sorry that it didn’t last longer! I think some members have had steroid injection along with lidocaine, so it’s lasted longer.
I have a 3D CT with contrast .
my stiloids are 25 mm left and 27 mm right, so … no elongation .
I use 3D Slicer for measurement .
I cant understand HOW is it possible to have 90% of eagle syndrome symptoms for 2 years
Unilateral pharingeal pain , ear pain , pain turning head , shoulder pain , trapezus pain , neck pain , inflammatory lymph nodes on right , stretched neck muscles on right side…
I removed the tonsils and now , if i push tonsillar fossa i can feal a bone in there , i can feel it moving when turning head and it’s excrutiating painfull if i press too hard on it
I am still waiting for the medical repport …
This is the spot where i can feel the bone and all the pain is comming from.
The pain is behind pharingeal wall and is unbearable if i put mild pressure on it.
I wish that we could help you more, it’s so frustrating for you. All I can say is again, there are research papers (in the Newbies Guide section) which show that the angle of the styloid processes can cause symptoms, & yours do look as if they’re at an angle- which then means that they styloids can compress nerves, maybe between the styloids & the vertebral processes. Again, as you know we’re not doctors, so can’t give a medical opinion, but from comparing your CT to others, they ends of the styloid processes do look quite pointy, which could maybe cause irritation?
If you can feel the styloid in your tonsil region, then that clearly isn’t normal. Also you did get some relief temporarily from the injections- alot of doctors use this as a diagnostic tool for ES, & again, there’s several research papers which mention this. If you do feel that ES is causing your symptoms, all I can suggest is that you get these research papers printed out & take back to the doctor to look at. Often alot of doctors don’t believe all our symptoms are down to ES, so members have decided to go ahead with surgery anyway, & have had the pleasure of explaining to the doctors which symptoms are cured with surgery!
The only other suggestion I can make is that you look into the ‘If not ES then what?’ section, & research some of the other conditions if you think ES might not be the cause of your neck problems. There are a few conditions with similar symptoms.
I’m so sorry that you’re in this position, all I can say is that you’re not alone & hopefully that will be a bit of comfort…
I agree w/ Jules. The first thing I noticed is the tips of your styloids look to have needle points. YIKES! I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re feeling them even if they aren’t too long! And yes, their angle can absolutely create symptoms even w/ short styloids.
I dont think it’s eagle syndrome . I think i found a verry possible diagnostic that explain all the symptoms ( reactive lymph nodes , throat pain , shoulder pain , neck pain, ear pain ,feeling a painfull bone in retropharingeal space , pain radiates to brachial plexus ) etc …
Retropharyngeal Calcific Tendinitis
I think this shoul be added to ‘If not ES then what?’ , becouse it have 95% of symptoms similar with eagle .
This diagnostic is not yet confirmed by a doctor but i will be evaluated for this and x-ray show calcification .
I’ll add it when I get a chance, thank you!
Hello. I was wondering if you got to the bottom of your pain. My symptoms sound so much like yours. I have seen so many drs as well, my styloids are fine according to drs but Im trying to figure out if it could possibly be hyoid bone syndrome.
