Question

I have a question and I’m not sure where to post this. I also have a thyroglossal duct cyst that is by the hyoid bone.. Is there any relationship with ES and this since they are in a similar region. Also, I was told that the styloid process supports the muscles including the hyoid.. Can anyone explain how they are related or work together?

The styloid is attached to the hyoid via the stylohyoid ligament. It doesn’t seem to actually provide that much support for the hyoid, as there are 10 muscles attached to the hyoid providing support and swallowing function.

And I’m not sure if there is any research on thyroglossal cyst and ES, I’m guessing not. A cyst can put pressure on adjacent vascular structures such as the carotid arteries though, and if large enough, I suspect it could interrupt normal function of the hyoid and surrounding muscles.

Do you have access to your CT imaging?

We have had members who’ve had cysts in their thyroid which are being monitored, so not sure if that’s the same as you have? Not sure if this is coincidence or if they’re linked…
As @TML says, the styloids & the stylo-hyoid ligaments don’t affect swallowing & normal movements, after surgery it doesn’t seem to be any different.
@TML , you’re helping so many members with their imaging & you have pretty bad symptoms yourself so it’s not surprising that you forget some things! :hugs:
