Yes, external recovery is usually easier than intra-oral, because the throat is less painful, and there’s less chance of infection. Having bilateral surgery can be more painful though as obviously you have two incisions! Swelling can be a problem with bilateral surgery, so if your doctor inserts a drain that will help, although not all do this. You could ask for steroids to be prescribed as that will help, but certainly ice your neck regularly with ice packs wrapped in a towel, suck on ice chips if you can, & sleep propped up. It’s a good idea to get soft foods, smoothies etc ready as eating & opening your mouth wide can be uncomfortable after surgery. We suggest keeping up with your pain meds regularly, don’t try & be brave, & have a constipation remedy handy depending on what meds you have as some can cause this!
