Hi guys- I had a styloidectomy about six months ago and will be having the second side done soon. Second side will likely have a C1 shave- compression at C1 measures 136. If you’ve done a styloidectomy with and without a shave can you please compare recoveries for me?
Thank you
I had styloidectomies without needing C1 shave, so can’t comment on recovery about that, hopefully others will chip in for you.
Have you got a date for your 2nd surgery?
Who will be doing your surgery?
@Nikkimm I just had the left styloidectomy and C1 shave nearly 5 weeks ago. I can’t see how shaving 1 mm or so from C1 would impact the recovery. The main thing just seemed to be recovery from the swelling of the surgery itself and the retraction needed to work in such a small space plus any nerve irritation that may have occurred during the styloidectomy process. I stopped prescription pain medication the day after surgery which was too soon and 2 days later went back on it for 3 days. I noticed VES symptom reduction at the 10 day mark. I felt generally good from the post surgical symptoms at the 2 week mark. I was still having some minor headaches from muscle tension for a few days after then gone. My overall stamina was significantly improved at about 3 weeks but I still flag a little in the afternoon although every day is better than the day before, Hope that helps.
Thanks so much! I hope your recovery continues to go well.
Hi @Nikkimm,
I’m now 6 month out and can’t really tell a difference in recovery between with and without shaving. It feels pretty much the same. Only the headpressure symptoms were improved much further and immediately by the second surgery with shaving TP.
I’m thinking you are with Dr. H in CO. So nothing to worry about imo bc he is an outstanding genius for those surgeries.
I’m planning to write a more comprehensive update about my last surgery soon.
