I hope all is well. I expect a surgery for my compressed IJV in December but I am waiting for a confirmation next week.
I would like to know how you prepare mentally for your surgery. I am very relieved and so grateful a Neurosurgeon in the USA took my symptoms seriously. Now I am in the a phase where anxiety and happiness intertwine.
I’m pleased that you’ve managed to get surgery, I’m sorry I can’t remember who’s doing your op?
I think the best way to get prepared mentally is to be informed as much as possible, and to get all the practical things you need ready too. Read post-op stories to get an idea of what to expect, and be realistic about healing- it’s not likely that symptoms will be immediately resolved, so be prepared for that, days 3-5 days can be the worst for swelling so expect those might be difficult, after that things can slowly improve, but some days might be better, some worse, one step forward & another back sometimes!
There’s info in the Newbies Guide Section, & a shopping list for items to get ready: ES Information- Treatment: Surgery - Welcome / Newbies Guide to Eagle Syndrome - Living with Eagle
Have you got someone with you to support you?
You have faith, for me reading the psalms was an encouragement before surgery, & listening to worship songs.
Let us know when you have a date!
It’s natural to have anxiety about the unknown, Audrey. Ask God to give you His peace & freedom from anxiety i.e. peace that comes from Him not from any effort on your part. He’s given me that peace many times when I’ve asked for it.
How long patients stay in the hospital after surgery?
I will have the Styloid Bone and ligaments removed, and C1 shaving. I was told by my Neurosurgeon it should be around 2 days. I am just curious to know about other patients experience.
It does vary, that sounds fair enough…I was kept in overnight for just a styloidectomy, often in the US this is done as a day case, but obviously having a C1 shave makes it a longer surgery.
Hopefully others will chip in.
I’m so happy that you are able to have surgery and begin the process of getting better. My surgery was similar to what you are going to have. I also had some additional compressions that the surgeon hadn’t anticipated but had to deal with during surgery, so the operation took twice as long as expected. I had surgery early on a Monday morning and then was released from the hospital by lunch time on Tuesday. I do have to say though that after being released from the hospital, I did pretty much stay in bed the rest of the day on Tuesday. I was a little hesitant that I was released so early, just in case something might go wrong. The surgeon said that they usually keep patients 24 - 48 hours after the surgery. As long as recovery is going well, I think that they try to discharge you from the hospital as soon as they can. I’m glad that you have the Lord to lean on during this time. I know that He is faithful to comfort us when we need it. He helped me through a great deal of anxiety prior to the surgery. All of the things that @Jules recommended were very helpful to me as well. Also, I had to travel about 6 hours from home to have surgery, so we stayed in a hotel in the area close to the hospital. Being so close to the hospital helped ease my mind in case there were any post operative complications. Please let us know when you know for sure about your surgery & let us know who the surgeon is. I’ll keep you in my prayers.
