Surgery set for May 15

I am scheduled to have a right tonsillectomy and styloidectomy on May 15th. Im nervous and excited at the same time. Dr Karni in Houston is going to be doing my surgery via intra-oral route. I had a consultation with an oral surgeon for a consultation to have a tooth removed and implant and he was excited to see “real Eagle’s syndrome” so he did a 3d ct for me . (Complimentary) .

I’m glad you have a surgery date set to get that nasty styloid out. I see a small bit of calcification on your stylohyoid ligament on the lesser horn of your hyoid. It may be that won’t cause any problems if it’s left there, but you might want to ask Dr. Karni about it before surgery. I also need to warn you that in bilateral cases, once one side is removed, the other styloid may become more symptomatic. We always hope that won’t happen, but you need to be aware that it can.

Surgeries w/ both tonsillectomy & styloidectomy can cause substantial throat pain for a few weeks. Prior to surgery, it would be a good idea to request a course of a liquid form of a steroid such as dexamethasone or prednisone to take in the first couple of weeks post op as that will help reduce swelling.

Our members who’ve had intraoral styloidectomies have found sucking on ice chips or popsicles (you can make your own out of fruit juice to avoid added sugar) is helpful in easy throat pain. You’ll definitely want a very soft food/liquid diet for awhile, too. Getting food ready in advance will help you.
