Warning on Vitamin B6 supplmentation

I have seen many comments about using Vitamin B6 for nerve damage and nerve pain on the forum pre and post op. I would just like to bring to everybodies attention that vitamin B6 especially when there is over supplementation can cause nerve pain and nerve damage.

Unless you have some specific medical condition or take medication that can reduce levels of Vitamin B6, most people absorb a more than sufficient amount of Vitamin B6 from their diet.

Clinical deficiency is rare. The recommended daily intake is between 1.3 - 1.5mg. Anymore is pointless and puts you at risk from suffering from symptoms associated with Vitamin B6 toxicity especially if you take other supplements, foods and energy drinks that can contain supplementary Vitamin B6 (eg magnesium supplements quite often contain supplementary Vitamin B6).

Take care and think twice before taking a Vitamin B complex or a magnesium supplement containing Vitamin B6. Below is an article from the Brain Foundation Australia website for further information:

Thank you for that info @Emerald , we do usually suggest that members check with their doctors before taking supplements…

Good information, @Emerald. Thank you for posting it. Good to know that the water soluble vitamins, too, can cause trouble when taken in too great a quantity.

I ended up with B6 toxicity. The simple solution was to take a B complex minus B6. Problem solved.
