When ES returns! What are your symptoms or knowledge of it?

Good Morning,

So, I've had ES for about 10 years now. I had surgery in 06',07', and 2011. I found out shortly after that my ES was coming back. I was in a bad accident left with a biracial plexus injury, now they have me seeing a hand specialist, TOS Dr., ENT Dr., and two neurologists. I started having stomach issues resulting in them taking out my gal bladder.

Since 2009, I have not really had ANY ear aches, or strep/sore throat feelings... It's been sometime since I've had major issues with this... But two nights ago I was coughing because these weird things were dropping out of my throat (calcium deposits) which I know my tonsils produced and choked me when I feel asleep.

Well, the tickle itch/deposit stuff that I haven't got since my tonsils were removed came back two nights ago, the cough began a week prior. Yesterday morning when I woke up the deposits stopped, coughing stopped but my throat hurts BAD!Only on the right side, and weird thing... my head hurts and has that feeling of a wound or pimple... but theres nothing! It's like nerve pain almost... ALL around my ear... my voice is jacked.. my sleep is off... But this weird phantom/nerve pain is driving me crazy! My throat is still sore... VERY sore...

Anyone feel this way?

Ang~

Ang, I am so sorry. You have been through so much! It really sounds like Eagle syndrome is back, doesn't it? I really hope it's not that and it's nothing serious. The fact that it's all on the right side is pretty suspicious, though. :(

I still have occasional earaches and sore throats, but they're few and far between, and often last less than an hour. I did have one bad day when I was sure my styloid had grown back, but after a popsicle binge it went away. I'm hoping mine is just swelling around the surgical site.

I hate car accidents! I'm so sorry that your accident did you so much harm. I had an accident a year before my eagle stuff kicked in. I wonder if yours prompted your styloid to start growing again? I really hope not. Do you have a good ENT?

Thanks for your response. I called my ENT because my throat pain pain is very light.. not much pain... but my head feels crazy weird... you know how when you put your hair up and sometimes its tender? It's like that times 10. It's such a odd feeling that I do not know how to express the feeling, other than it bothering me... I feel horrible I hurt always and have my family always hearing me complain... I just want a break... I just got my gal bladder out last Thursday and I feel it triggered something and I'm wondering if it's due to my immune system being messed up?

Do you get me about the sensations? How it's pain but it's not a normal sick pain? boo this sucks...oh I did call my ENT but they haven't responded which is odd because they always do, right even... sometimes I wish feeling this way I could go to the ER and they can look it up and do what tests they need too...

Hi Ang,

Sorry to read that you have been through all of this and are suffering :(

I'm still fairly new to this site and don't know the info on your surgeries.

How much did they remove (how far did they take it down to)?

Internal/ external? Did they take out the ligaments too?

(I had my left one removed 3 weeks ago)

Praying that you get relief soon!! :)

Take Care,

Sheila

It's weird that my ENT has yet to respond so I'll be calling AGAIN tomorrow.

I've had 3 on my neck. two on my left side and one on my right... the first on each side were like 1.5inches long and one side was the length of a nickle and the other was length of a dime.

What about you Lailei?

I am so sorry you are having these problems. I wonder if you were incubated for the gall bladder surgery and if this stretched some scar tissue or something. It’s awful to go through this stuff and not know. I hope you find some relief soon. Polly.

I live with episodes of not wanting to swallow, touch my hair or face or brush my teeth because of pain on the left side of my head. It's trigminal neuralgia (irritation of the trigminal nerve). Research it and I'm sure you will find that they are describing exactly what you have!! I take anti-inflammatories. Sometimes stead pressure also helps. Good luck. I hope you find relief soon.

Definitely call them again!

Were they done by the internal or external route?

Did they remove the whole ligament and take it down to the base of skull?

The reason I also ask is because......... I asked my surgeon (Dr. Samji) if it could grow back. He said no because he removes the whole thing (ligament included).

Mine measured in at 30 mm.

What both Polly and Wadams said also makes sense to me.

Maybe you could get a new scan done to see what is going on?!

Hoping you get some answers soon so get some relief.

Take care,

Sheila

Hi! I just got a call back and have to go in Tuesday. we are going over my last scans and new symptoms and possibly new ones i'll have to get done.

Polly your right... they did put a tube down my neck... and ever since it's been wack...

Lailei, I had it external. and they shaved down to the bone. I did not have the ligament taken out.

I really wish they knew what this is all about... :(

Yay!! Glad they called you back and you were able to get an appointment.

Hang in there!!

Hope the time goes fast and they can do something to help you :)

Take care,

Sheila

My first eagle syndrome symptoms happened soon after I was intubated for a different surgery. Hmmm....

I hope it's not TN :( I wish I had something helpful to post, just hoping for you that there is an answer that's not TN.

I wouldn't think it's TN at all as TN does not cause pains in the throat or around ears !!!!

Whats TN?

my ent told me ppl with es need to be put under a different way or a tube in a paticular way... yes.. my last surgery messed with me for a couple months... then i've been ok.. but now extremely weird symptoms.. last Wednesday i was hurting soooooooooo bad... in march my neck was tightening bad.... but they said it was allergic reaction... i disagree bc it felt my blood flow was being restricted from my head.. and i could breath... weird... tonight I had a weird feeling like deposits in my throat but the pain isn't in my throat :*( I need to get this undercontrol bc in two weeks i have that Major reconctructive surgery in MN

TN is trigeminal neuralgia !!

how do you know you have this ???

trust me you wouldn't want to have TN here is a great link > http://www.tna.org.uk/

No thanks god I don't have it !!! Classic Trigeminal Neuralgia

This is typically caused by a blood vessel or vessels compressing the trigeminal nerve as it enters the brainstem. The loss of the myelin sheath surrounding the nerve will have been caused by the constant rubbing and pulsating of the blood vessel(s), causing erratic messages to be transmitted along the wrong nerve fibres, ie, “cross talk” between light touch and pain fibres. It is established that the majority of TN cases are caused this way. It is likely that the offending vessels will be identified on an MRI scan, although this is not always the case. This type of TN results in clearly identifiable triggers which can provoke pain attacks. These triggers can include:

  • Brushing teeth
  • Yawning
  • Swallowing
  • Face washing
  • Shaving or putting on make-up
  • Vibration or sudden movement, even walking
  • Exposure to cold, a breeze on the face or air conditioning
  • A light touch to the affected area
  • Eating or biting into something
  • Talking or smiling
