I have heard that some muscles do calcify and start pressing on cervical nerves/arteries, also restrict neck movements and flexibility, but can’t remember where that was mentioned… Also, I have_ heard that some muscles might compress these structures even if they aren’t clcified. So probably it’s the best to talk to your surgeon about the details and rationality behind that. But if he is a top class surgeon, he definitely does not do random things, and there must be some real reason why the muscle got removed.
Ahh, here it is about the muscle: Article about jugular vein compression
Thanks for the information. Not sure it applies. Never been discussed before at appointments and preop consent was signed to styloid removal and incision inline with neck line. Skin was marked for that too. No mention of muscle removal or change in site of incision.
It’s a worry- I guess as you say he’s an experienced head & neck surgeon, he would know what he’s doing, but…Usually during surgery the nerves are monitored to make sure that they won’t be damaged; maybe he felt the risk of nerve damage was to high to remove the styloid?
I think unfortunately it’s something you’re going to have to discuss with him; to ask why he didn’t remove the styloid, how what is too difficult, why he removed the muscle, & how he thinks it will help your symptoms?
I guess you won’t know for a little while how it will help your symptoms, I’ve never had to make an NHS complaint before, but it might be worth looking into that if you don’t get some satisfactory answers…
Hope that the swelling goes down quickly, make sure you sleep half upright, & use a covered ice pack on your neck.
Sorry we can’t be more helpful…but thinking of you, & will pray for healing
Thank you yes will have to clarify. He missed me at ward rounds this morning too which hasn’t helped. Pre surgery paper work is all about styloid and left neck direction. Now have 16cm incisionacross base of throat . No idea why he decided to ignore the marks he drew at my ear and open under chin. Hopefully as the fog lifts I can ask him more coherent questions. Thanks for all your support
Your situation is very alarming & curious. I’m as baffled as you are. It would seem he would have had to make the incision in the originally planned location on your neck & try to access the styloid before deciding he couldn’t due to nerves or other soft tissues interfering. I hope he has a good explanation & also hope that as you heal you notice resolution to your symptoms. I will also pray for you.
How are you doing, are you recovering okay? And have you been able to get any answers yet? Thinking of you…
