Bilateral surgery with Dr Hackman tomorrow

Met with Dr. Hackman this afternoon, and things went really well! He, of course, said there are no guarantees with surgery resolving symptoms, but felt confident that this was the right thing to do for me. Surgery is at 12:30 tomorrow afternoon. Based on others’ recommendations, my husband will be staying with me overnight at the hospital.

I’m excited about this! I’ll keep you all posted!

Lol… I told him that he highly regarded on this forum. A rock star! He laughed!

Thank you, @Isaiah_40_31 and @Jules! Surgery went very well. I was checked out by so many nurses, doctors, techs, etc, and everything looks good. A little bit of numbness, ears are a little stuffy, a small bruise by my left eye, but no nerve issues… grateful for that!

Dr Hackman said there was a lot of inflammation caused by my left styloid, and said that he hopes and expects the tremors and other symptoms to resolve over time. Said that he sees about only 25% of patients get immediate resolution of symptoms. So I continue to be patient.

Because of the inflammation, they gave me iv steroids right away, and I did experience some nausea. I kept trying to stop myself from tossing it, lol… I didn’t want to lose the pain meds! Overall, I feel pretty good. Not in a lot of pain at all, I can eat, but I pretty tired. Resting today at our VRBO, flying home tomorrow. I’ll share updates after I’m home.

Again, I seriously cannot thank you all so much for this forum and everyone’s input… especially @Isaiah_40_31 and @Jules! I would have felt so lost without it! Bless you all!! :sparkling_heart:

Question about prednisone…. We’re flying out tomorrow morning with a layover in Minneapolis. The nurses suggested starting the med pack of prednisone tomorrow, but I’m a little hesitant due to the side effects of dizziness and nausea during our 7 hours of traveling, especially since I experienced nausea in the hospital. Would that have most likely been due to the iv prednisone, or the combination of meds and anesthesia? Would it be ok to start the med pack on Saturday? I plan to continue with ibuprofen, Tylenol, and/or Oxy. Although it was interesting… I was given Tylenol and oxy together, but in his notes, Dr. Hackman said to use “oxycodone in the first few days instead of the Tylenol, but still use ibuprofen.”

I would love to hear your thoughts and/or experiences!

Hi @DeeCeeNorth - Thank you for the update & I’m so glad to hear all went well & you’re not in a lot of pain.

Regarding the prednisone, it’s my non-medical opinion that you were most likely nauseous because of the anesthesia & other surgical meds, but the prednisone could have been “the icing on the cake”.

I can’t guarantee you won’t have nausea/dizziness from the oral version, but having taking lots of prednisone over about 8 years, the side effects I get from it are jitteryness i.e. I feel hyperactive - can’t focus for very long on any one thing, my “fuse” gets very short so I’m easily irritated, & I can’t sleep for more than 2-4 hrs at a time. I’ve never had a problem w/ oral steroids causing nausea, but I have had that problem w/ anesthesia. That didn’t answer your question…it probably won’t hurt for you to wait until Sat. to start the prednisone especially since you’re taking ibuprofen. I highly recommend you take your dose first thing in the morning shortly after you get up or with breakfast at the latest as that will help it not to keep you awake at night. You should not take ibuprofen while taking Prednisone.

The max amount of Tylenol/acetaminophen you can take in a day is 4000 mg so if the total oxycodone plus Tylenol you take in a day doesn’t give you more than 4k mg of Tylenol, then you’re fine taking them together.

I hope your trip home goes without a hitch. I’m glad you got the wheelchair reserved & I hope it makes your time in the airport(s) go smoothly & efficiently. :hugs:

So pleased that surgery went well, and great that you’re not in too much pain…I can’t give you any advice on the meds I’m afraid, I’ve never had steroids and didn’t have to take anything strong after surgery.
I hope that you have a safe flight home and can get a better rest at home! :hugs:
