Compression of internal carotid artery by elongated styloid process

That’s wonderful news, so pleased that your father’s surgery went well! The swelling can take a few days to settle so he may not feel any benefits of the surgery for a little while. Praying for a good recovery

I was praying for your father & his surgeons today & so hoping foe this good news. Thank you foe the update, Zobaib!

As Jules said, the first few days to a week are when the swelling & pain will be the worst. Make sure your father rests & sleeps with his head elevated to help reduce swelling once he’s released from the hospital. Ice packs used on his incision site for 15 min every few hours may also help with pain & swelling.

I hope his recovery progresses quickly.

Post Op - Day:4

Thank you for ypur prayers. It meant alot.
He is recovering quickly. Minor swelling with minor pain. Just painfull for him to swallow which doctor said will be eliminated by the passage of time.
He had some puss (streak of fluid) on wound line. For which Ultrasound and blood CP was carried out and Thanx God every thing was normal.
His drain and NG tube is intact which will be removed tomorrow.

He is all well except for swallowing pain.

Hi Zohaib,

The operation notes look great & very thorough. I’m so glad your father continues to do well. It took two months before I felt pretty normal after my first surgery & 9-12 months before most of my ES symptoms were pretty well gone. The affected nerves can be very slow to heal but they do heal.

I bet your father will be ecstatic to have the NG tube removed & to be able to eat a meal normally. I hope the remainder of his healing goes smoothly & as quickly as possible. :sunflower:

So pleased that your father is recovering well so far! It sounds like his care has been very good & thorough…the next few days may have ups & downs, so please reassure him that this is normal if he does have more pain or some symptoms back. God bless, & thanks for the updates

Post Operation - Day 40

My Father is all well now. All the issue/ symptoms prior to Surgery are gone. It took almost 30 day for the wound to be healed. Now its all fine with zero infection or complication. Yesterday his CT Angio was taken again and it shows all normal. Here i am posting his Pre-op CT Angio Report and fresh Post-op CT Angio.

That’s great news, really pleased that your father’s surgery has reduced his vascular symptoms! Thank you very much for posting to let us know how he is- good to see those reports showing the carotid artery is fine now! Does your father have any symptoms on the other side? Just looking at the report & noticed it mentions that the right is elongated- we have noticed often after surgery the other side can start to cause symptoms. Hopefully not for your father though!

Thanks God no.
Although it is also a bit elongated on right side but its not causing any symptoms or problem. I’ve discussed it with surgeon and his opinion was "Let it be there. If it gets to start causing problem then we will think about it. Next CT Angio will be done after 6 months to see for any changes

@Zohaib,

This is such good news! Thank you for posting an update & letting us know your father is well. I, too, hope the right styloid never causes a problem. Forty days for recovery from this surgery is remarkable! It can take much longer for a good recovery like your father has had!

Can you please give us the name & contact information for the vascular surgeon & the surgeon who is the department head who did your father’s surgery. I will add them to our Doctors List.

I’m so thankful for your father’s good surgical recovery!

I have a compressed carotid artery as the left styloid has grown back at an angle and into my throat.I had seen 5 ent specialist’s in the UK who refused to operate as it’s too risky.I have found Mr Axon at Addenbrookes hospital Cambridge who is going to operate to remove the stylus on 7th July.Whereas other surgeons were looking at taking it out from the throat (externally this time) Mr Axon is taking it from where it grows and down. The excision will be at the back of my ear and down to throat.I saw him operate on a cancer patient on tv, the carotid and main nerves were involved and he was brilliant. After seing this I have every faith in him :hugs: Mr Axon has operated on many patients with ES successful.I will let you know how it goes after surgery…Jan

Hi Jan,

it’s good to hear that you have your surgery tomorrow. A little nervousness is normal and also very helpful in preparing your body for the operation. This activates, among other things, wound healing and immune defense.

For tomorrow I wish you all the best and good luck.

Best regards
