Had right external styloidectomy today

Hello everyone.

I had my second external styloidectomy surgery today at around 3pm in Australia, Victoria, Geelong with Dr.Roy Nicholson.

It’s been a success and i can already feel the difference with my symptoms subsiding.

I was dealing with

●chronic neck pain
●feeling of something stuck in throat
●eye pain
●ear pain
●ear canal irritation like full of air
●nose congestion
●migraines
●fatigue
●burning throat sensation
●bloodshot eye
●nerve pain in jaw/cheek/teeth areas
And more i can’t remember.

If you have any questions, I’ll be more than happy to reply back.

Really pleased that your surgery seems to have helped already, that's great news! Hope that you continue to heal well, Ken!

That is awesome news that you already feel great relief!! Was yours considered classic or vascular? I am very curious about why this causes eye symptoms, and possibly you can answer that for me. I also have bloodshot and burning eyes but on the side where I have the most amount of pain my eye is more bloodshot. All the other symptoms I experience make "sense" to some extent, but not the eye symptoms. Do you understand this?

Thank you.

The styloid process is imbetween the external and internal carotid blood vessels. If it's elongated or angled, it can compress or irritate these blood vessels. These blood vessels lead to the arteries supplying the eye, so the pain etc. in the eye can be caused by the styloid pressing on the arteries, stimulating the sympathetic nerve plexus around the blood vessel, so symptoms appear along the artery route. It can also cause headaches, and occasionally vision disturbance. Apparently if the internal carotid artery is affected, pain can radiate to the area above the eye; if it's the external carotid then pain radiates to below the eye.

Also one of the branches of the Trigeminal nerve (5th cranial nerve) goes to the eye- the ophthalmic nerve, so if the Trigeminal nerve is irritated by an elongated styloid, this could cause neuralgia (aching or shooting pains) along one of the branches. I think this nerve also carries sensory information from the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye, so is partly responsible for tear production. If your eyes feel dry, sore or gritty, it would be worth seeing an ophthalmologist to get them checked. You might need lubricating eye drops. It could be otherwise that if your eye is painful, you're blinking less because it hurts, and that this is making the eye dry out, so it gets bloodshot.

Thank you for being kind everyone. I’m just having trouble eating because of my sore throat, same thing i went through for my left styloidectomy last year.

My diagnosis was classic and with my eye it would be bloodshot everyday with pulsating pain.

Zdravka, would that by any chance be dr. Javier Maiz Cal? I saw him in Barcelona in May, a very good doctor! He is very knowledgeable, empathetic and takes very good time to explain everything in detail (spent 1,5 hrs. with me and he even had another specialist take a look at me the next day with him - without extra charge). If it’s this doctor he has done around 30 ES surgeries. Great clinic and they get back to you very quickly as well!

Nenufar- how're you getting on- I've not seen you on here recently? Jules

Hi Jules. I’m still in the process of getting a diagnosis. I saw the specialist in Barcelona in May. Great doctor, very professional, skilled and empathetic! He has done 30 ES surgeries, and he said all had been successful! He wanted me to take a newer/better CT as there are calcifications on my ligaments, but he couldn’t see on the scans wether they were 100% calcified or not. A surgery is, apparently, more complicated if they are not all calcified. Said he could still do the surgery and he doesn’t give up easily, but couldn’t promise total relief. I might still take the chance! I didn’t get around to take the new CT scan yet, as I had a different surgery in June (benign breast tumor) and then summer vacation back home in Norway/Sweden. I will set up an appointment very soon, though, as I would like relief for the pain soon!

Nenufar,

I had my styloids shortened without my ligaments being totally calcified and the relief has been amazing. My doctor took out the ligaments entirely then shortened one styloid back to my skull. The other has a nerve wrapped around it so he couldn't take as much off, but even what he did remove (2.54 cm) has been life changing in a good way. I encourage you to encourage your doctor with this information.

Hi Ken, so glad to hear of your surgery being a success ! I'm also under Roy Nicholson .

Did you have your surgery in Geelong vic? & at St john of God or Geelong Bass?

I'm going to St John Of God, but atm am trying to get the cash together , as i don't have private health care.

Was Roy good? How was your recovery, & how many nights did you stay in hosp?

cheers, angie

Hey aussieeagle. I had it done in geelong hospital as it was cheaper on private.

Roy was really good, i stayed 1 night and my recovery is going great

That's fantastic KenD !

I have to pay for mine coz i don't have private Health Cover.

It'll cost around $4,500.

Did you have private health cover or did you pay for your surgery?

Hey aussieeagle, ask roy to do the operation in geelong hospital and the quote will be much cheaper.

Oh ok,

He told me that he has to do it at SJOG Hosp, not sure why,

Did you have yo pay for you stay at Geelong Base?

He did it privately with me at geelong hospital to cheapen the quote.
