Hi I am also in the process of figuring out if I have both HBS and ES. I also have Trigeminal nerve pain in my teeth which started.
My symptoms seem close to yours:
Pressure in sinus’
Trouble talking - I get zaps or shortness of breath or scratchy throat
Trouble swallowing , extra mucous or throat clearing(not reflux)
Strangulation feeling, felt internally and if anything touches the front of my neck externally.
Back of throat- glass feeling, like rubber bands snapping. This feeling goes to my chest at the end of the day, makes me feel like I have trouble breathing and a fire type feeling when I breath feels nerve like not like reflux.
I also have Hyoid bone clicking and popping with food and saliva.
I believe most symptoms are related to glosso or vagus nerve irritation from my hyoid or ES.
I also have long bilaterally calcified styloids and ligaments. I had a CTV and will be seeing Dr. Constantino in a few weeks. Dr Cognetti has me down for JULY! My issue is if this can all be caused by the Hyoid or both. I do also have Hypermobility and some neck instability.
I’ve seen some on the Facebook group say their nerve pain in the throat GPN did not improve after styloidectomy. So I am pursing my hyoid as an issue foremost. Very few doctor treat both I also am planning to try to see Dr Dewan as well.
@Jess1 - Some doctors will only do a styloidectomy if the “correct” symptoms are present & styloid is beyond a certain length (these criteria vary by doctor) whereas others don’t rely on styloid length but on the symptoms (these doctors understand that particular symptoms, such as a sore throat, don’t have to be present to determine whether a styloidectomy might be helpful.
It’s good to know Dr. Damrose does HBS surgeries as well as those for ES & vES!
@DJflower33 - I’m so glad to read you have appointments set up w/ both Dr. Costantino & Dr. Cognetti. It’s been along wait for you & still is for Dr. Cognetti. I hope you get some good information from Dr. Costantino to consider while you wait. Also if you do get an appointment w/ Dr. Dewan, please share what she says as we’re always happy to learn more about problems similar to ES like HBS. We do know Dr. Dewan doesn’t do ES surgeries.
We have noted that Dr. Cognetti does hyoid bone surgeries as well as styloidectomies & surgeries for vES (Dr. Heller does the C1 shaving if it’s necessary). However, I don’t think Dr. Costantino does hyoid bone surgeries, but I could be wrong. Please let us know what you learn.
