Pain in the teeth

Following and really feeling all of you on the frustrating and mysterious intersection of tooth pain and ES. I have had root canals done and redone multiple times because dentists can’t believe I have pain in a tooth with no nerve. I’ve had multiple root canals that I don’t think I even needed because of unexplained pain from both hot and cold. Caps consistently irritate my gums and nothing ever feels good in my mouth. I’m pretty sure I also developed TMJ after too many dental visits in one year. I could go on. What a mess! It’s so good to know I’m not alone. You aren’t either!

30 days out from removal of my left styloid and I still have left side tooth pain in a tooth that has had a root canal. Maybe it’s too soon to tell? I’ll keep you all posted.

My best from Brooklyn!

Hi EagleInBrooklyn,

It could take up to 6+ months for your tooth pain to go away if its from ES. Patience is the key. Hopefully you’ll notice it gradually disappearing going forward.

I’m getting to go in for a full crown on one and have had this one upper molar on left side where I had ES surgery bugging the hell out of me. The hot /cold sensitivity is just something I have learned to live with (for decades is seems) and I never get any answers given I have about 8 root canals myself. For some reason, this past year I have had an accelerated decay around gum lines.Ive been given 2 toothpastes to use and was using a special mouthwash (germ killing) temporarily to knock it down. I have never found a “sensitive” teeth toothpastes to be of any help.

Dentist has taken xrays and doesnt see much. RE: no cracks. I suspect I do have some trigeminal root irritation from surgery but I also think this tooth which has a partial crown has got some erosion and new decay under the crown that cant be seen on xray like I just had on other side of my mouth. Im almost tempted to have dentist do this side first to see if this irritation subsides before my next ES surgery. The other one has decay though reaching below the gum line.
Hang in there Brooklyn. You are not alone in these dang tooth and root issues. Give your self another 6 weeks of healing.

Snapple, is your mouth dry, or do you not have trouble with that?

Hi! I would like to add to this. I also have horrible tooth pain. But I noticed something on one of the pictures I made. I have a vein that runs from my eye across my cheek and down into my teeth. When the pain is bad I sit and rub that exact track with my hand over and over. My Dr had said I have TN but I could not understand why I could touch my face while having TN. While making a 3D I noticed this vein and I am guessing when my neck, throat and face swell it may get pressured or starved? Nerve pain is a funny thing. I know how horrible and maddening this pain is, I truly do. I feel for anyone else going through this. I hope your husband feels better soon.

Please ignore my green arrow. Picture of my painful vein.

Luckily dry mouth is not one of my issues Jules :upside_down_face:

Nerve pain is a funny thing. I go in, in about a week to start on a crown. I am still having this same tooth and nerve issues over on the other side (side I had ES surgery) and it is really starting to bother me. We had this on the #2 list to do after first of year. Dentist claims no fracture that he can see or that anything is wrong other than it needs a full crown. Just the nerve in sinus that is right above it that he says is low. I think I am going to have him do this tooth first. It is really starting to bug me and becoming intolerable. All this little nerve issues are maddening for sure!

I am sorry I hope it helps! Hugs! :heavy_heart_exclamation:

Unfortunately, the new crown work has not helped with this damn nerve pain that radiates from TMJ joint across top of cheek above molars. Im sure the long dental time did not help. It now feels like my jaw is slipping out of joint on that side when I chew much of anything substantial. Im also getting some pain radiating from what appears to be the C2 C3 area and occipital region. I’m wondering about a pinched vein or nerve now like you dharmadel.
Luckily I am seeing a well regarded TMJ specialist next week and I suspect I need some new imaging of my jaw. My CBCT is 5 years old. I am concerned my next ES surgery (intubation) on Dec 7 will flair this even more. I still have alot of numbness on that side from my 1st ES surgery last April so sometimes it is hard to tease out what is causing what. The joys of having multiple issues going on a same time. I had hoped that the 1st ES surgery would take care of most of my symptoms. I know my other side is quite a bit longer and may be contributing to the neck and jaw issues. Just got to keep plugging along moving forward. Any relief is welcome as many know here.

Hi Snapple2020,

I’m sorry for the new pain & TMJ issues. How frustrating. Perhaps it’s not a bad thing you’re having your ES surgery soon since your jaw is already challenged, surgery won’t be creating a new problem. Hopefully it won’t exacerbate the current one & all will heal quickly once your surgery is done. Getting that second styloid removed may actually really help w/ the current TMJ situation. I’ll be praying that’s the case, anyway.

Glad to know you have an appt w/ a good TMJ specialist next week. Please let us know what you learn.

:hugs:

Thinking of you, so tricky working out what’s what…at least after getting the 2nd side done you’ll know you can rule out any ES symptoms & concentrate on the teeth & jaw :hugs:

My thoughts exactly Jules. Process of elimination. I’m determined to get to the source(s) of this dang nerve pain.
I will warn anesthesiologist about the dislocating jaw and for them to use caution. I know I have a narrow small mouth and I will remind them of that to use smaller items. I am hoping Isaiah that removing the other styloid which I know is longer and was the docs first choice to remove may help improve in long run all this dysfunction. Its possible it connects to the hyoid and has restricted movement? On the bright side, maybe the pain on new surgery side will distract me from this and send a different pain path to the brain? Also, Ill be loaded up with prednisone and pain killers which should even this out…at least for awhile. LOL!

Here is a good link to tooth pain and trying to tease out sources of nerve pain.

Thanks for that article- will have a look!

I love your good attitude & sense of humor, Snapple! You just may be right about new pain pathways being created (& then hopefully destroyed as healing occurs!!) i.e. NO MORE PAIN!!

As an update to tooth and nerve pain, I saw a TMJ specialist and got an updated CBCT scan of my jaw. Most have my pain has been on the left side and I had styloid surgery on that side end of April. Ive still been strugging with pain on that side and tried alot of therapies and injections to break the tension and pain. Last CBCT was 5 years ago. I am very glad I sought out this specialist and spent the $$ out of pocket with hopes I get some reimbursement from insurance.

Although I knew I had some osteoarthritis in my jaw, I learned the condoyle on the right side is about 50% less than on the right causing a major bite problem and jamming the left back into the joint that is likely the cause of the nerve pain in upper molars that has been driving me crazy. The past couple weeks I also have been experiencing the left TMJ dislocate when chewing. My C2-C3 is rotated left along with the jaw is skewed down to left. The bottom line is that I will need a $2K appliance to try and right this ship.

I had my right side ES surgery on the 7th and some of the jaw issues are calming down because Im on prednisone and cant chew or speak very well because of tongue issues. Surgeon mentioned that when he cut into my neck on right side, it was “very tight”. I imagine I will continue to struggle with muscle and ligament tension but hope with this ES surgery behind me and the appliance to reposition my jaw, it will begin to resolve… at least get better. I see the months ahead filled with PT, OT and massage and anything else needed to address the neck tension. I have the added complication of long time neck instability from ehlers danlos hypermobility an some early whiplash accidents. This major neck pain and flair started on this side 5 years ago and I’m told the process went deep into the neck. Probably why a tougher recovery this time around. The swallowing pain I had after surgery is right where this pain would start and move up my neck 5 years ago although it isn’t in the area of incision? Go figure.

On a side note, the TMJ specialist made an interesting comment. He wondered some times that because the muscles and ligaments are so tight in neck, that the clamping down of the them on the calcified ligaments and/or styloid is causing the pain. It was just a theory if his outside of any nerve compression caused by styloid process. The neck and jaw are a complex interaction of all kinds of processes, Well I know I have it all going on so its a process of elimination now. Ill get there.

Hi Snapple,

So glad to read your update. I hope your tongue “gets back in the game” soon. I’m so glad surgery #2 is behind you.

Below, I’ve posted several of your post op pictures for you.

Thanks so much for posting! Ill have to take an updated one. The swelling is so much better than surgery 1! and so is the black & blue discoloring around the incision site. So strange to just have it around the mouth…and area they didnt cut into?

Could be if they monitored nerves there maybe? I had a big bruise over my eyebrow come out- I thought maybe they’d dropped me! I asked about it at my 2nd surgery, & was told it was probably the clips they used to monitor nerves. He said there’s a prominent vein which they might have caught a little. Where you intubated otherwise? Could’ve been when they opened your mouth for that?
