Pain inside tongue - someone with similar problems?

Hi,

I have a question.

For the last 8 or 9 months my tongue hurts. Only one half of the tongue and the pain is inside the tongue not on the outside. It began with a sore spot on the outside where my tongue meets my gold tooth so I thought it was some kind of allergic reaction.

But then I got this pain inside my tongue. It hurts when I press on my tongue and sometimes even when speak or move my tongue. I also have a strange feeling at the side of my tongue where its going down the throat (hope you understand what I mean...my english is not the best...soooorrrrryyyy for that).

I told 3 or 4 ENT's about the pain but none of them could see anything abnormal.

Does anyone here have similar problems? Could it be related to ES?

It sounds like it could be a neuralgia - and somewhat like the glossopharyngeal neuralgia that I had (which was cured with removal of the styloid).

Hi Heidemt

That is so good news for me to hear right now… Did your surgery heal all of your neuralgia?

Hi Ringblomman

I have it too. I just know that it is related to my ES. It feels terrible, and I also think that it is a kind of neuralgia… Or maybe an tissue inflammation caused by ES

I hope that you are ok and that you might be closer to an operation?

My tongue gets numb on one side to the point where I cant speak properly. It is an unusual symptoms that the Eagles doc that examined me had not seen before. But I think my Glossophyarngeal nerve may be trapped somehow. I can move that side of my tongue but I cant feel it If I stick it out too far it hurts like hell

Peacefulbuttons,

The muscles (and then ligaments) which control the tongue are attached to the styloid process, which is why moving your tongue hurts like that. Or so my doc told me- makes sense- there's a lot of chewy foods I can't eat now as it's too painful.

I have the same thing, when I first got the pain I thought I was having a stroke as my tongue I was in pain my tongue deviated to the left and it had looked like there was something living under my tongue it was moving all over there place and I had a slured speech. To this day I still suffer with this hopefully my surgery in 2 weeks is going to relive it

Eryn,

Good luck with your surgery, hope that it sorts your pain etc out.

I wrote this in sep 2013 and still have this horrible pain. A radiologist thought it might be my internal jugular veine causing the pain. The veine makes a loop touching the glossopharyngeal nerve.

My bony styloids are still there…i never got any help, ct scans show their lenghts about 3cm and that they are bony. But they did not mention the widths ( don’t know if this is the correct english word…hope you understand me anyway ;))

The pain caused by my right styloid is sometimes overwhelming and the left side of my tongue aches badly, especially if I move my tongue in a certain way.

I am currently investigating glossopharyngeal neuralgia caused by styloids. My styloids are more than 3 cm which is considered too long but they are not super long like some here. You can have normal length styloids causing the tongue symptoms which are due to compression of the glossopharyngeal nerve. Evidently it is more common that you have a blood vessel pressing on that nerve. I have talked to a surgeon about removing my styloid but I am also going for a consult with another surgeon to see if my problem is a blood vessel laying on that nerve or if that is an additional factor. The most common cause of the tongue problem- that is glossopharngeal neuralgia- is having that blood vessel loop.It sounds like you now need to consult a neurosurgeon about possibly doing a decompression surgery. If that does not work sometimes they actually kill that nerve as you can live without it. Look on the net and find someone that does surgery for trigeminal neuralgia as they do compression surgeries for that also and might also do the glossopharyngeal surgeries. That is what I did and awaiting my consult. If I do not have the blood vessel problem I will be pretty sure its the styloids. If I do it could be both for me. TO me it sounds like you definitely have the blood vessel problem and that is what your radiologist told you. Now you just have to find a doctor that can do a glossopharyngeal nerve decompression, That would be a neurosurgeon.

Yep that was one of my first signs 10 yrs ago. My tongue to the right side was so painful with a red streak. All docs said they say nothing. 5yrs later I was diagnosed and had no insurance going through many many doctors. Go to a qualified ENT that knows about ES ..Eagles Syndrome. Some docs make you first go to a TMJ specialist before they do surgery. Depends on the severity of the pain and MRI and CT scans.

My styloids are not super long that is why my case is so hard to figure old. I have symptoms of both classical and carotid eagles with styloid that are only 3.6 cm. My tongue actually goes numb sometimes and I cannot talk right. I reads recently that the nerve that goes to it can get trapped by the styloid but wow so weird! I hope you have had your symptoms resolved dnurse4u
