Prendisolone

Hello, did anyone who had surgery take Prendisolone after the surgery and if so what amounts did you take?

Thanks

I was given an Rx for prednisone after my first two ES surgeries. I recall it was for 10 days each time & started w/ 50 mg for 2 days, then 40 mg, 30 mg, 20 mg, & finally 10 mg. After my third surgery last fall I was given a 10 day Rx of dexamethasone which I highly recommend over prednisone as it had far less negative side effects for me but worked just as well as an anti-inflammatory as the prednisone.

Hi how much dexamethasone were you given?

Honestly, I can’t remember but it was very similar & was also a 10 day course. It may have started a little lower at 40 mg but your prescribing doctor should know how much to start you on & at what rate to taper it.

I unexpectedly had to take steroids post op due to an allergic reaction to the skin prep. They gave dexamethasone injections in the hospital and I continued on a medrol dose pak at home. I think the steroids helped, and when they were discontinued symptoms got worse. Presently my symptoms are severe and I was told by my Neurologist to try lacosamide (which doesnt seem to be helping) and if that doesnt work, I will go on low dose of Medrol until my next surgery in September. I am curious how recovery will go with the second surgery not being on steroids, they really seem to help me, but you cant take them long term.

Hi are your symptoms severe because of the surgery or eagles?

due to eagles/ijv compression: head pressure/pain, dizzy, vision issues, brain fog, pulsatile tinnitus. surgery was on left, most of my symptoms now on the right. So hopefully after the right side surgery I have relief, fingers crossed.

@birdie1 - We have observed over the years that in bilateral ES cases, including those w/ vascular compression, the symptoms from the remaining side often worsen once the first side is taken care of. We think it could be that it can be difficult to tell which side is causing which symptoms until one styloid is removed (cross over symptoms are real! i.e. right styloid causes symptoms that are felt on the left & vice versa), &/or that having one styloid resected creates an imbalance in the neck that puts more pressure on the remaining side.

I’m really sorry you’re feeling so awful but it’s good to know that dexamethasone has been helpful for you. Have you asked Dr. Nakaji about taking a blood thinner until your next surgery? Some of our vES members w/ IJV compression have had very good symptoms reduction by taking a blood thinner (Plavix, Brillinta, & Xarelto are the ones that are mentioned most often on here). That might be worth a try as well. Also continuing to sleep w/ your head elevated at night might help some.

I did go back on brilinta shortly after first surgery. Glad to hear you have stories of people having symptoms worsen after the first surgery, I guess i am not alone, and I think I will go on the low dose steroids to get me thru

I’m sorry the Brillinta is being more helpful, @birdie1!

My doctor said to be without any hormons as long as possible but each case is different.
