TRELEAVEN (2008) - Sensorimotor disturbances in neck disorders affecting postural stability, head and eye movement control

Hey friends,
I came across this research paper and thought it might be helpful for some of us here. It’s about how neck problems can cause dizziness, balance issues, and even affect your vision.

Since Eagle Syndrome obviously puts a lot of strain on the neck area, I feel like this really connects the dots and explains some of our weirder symptoms perfectly.

Here is the link: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1356689X07001191

Hope this is an interesting read for anyone struggling with these specific issues.

Thanks again for posting another helpful research paper! Dizziness is such a common symptom, & we try to explain it through IJV compression or carotid artery compression, or possibly the vestibulocochlear nerve, but this is a really interesting possible cause!

Hi @TheDude - interesting indeed - I had read up a lot about this before I had my c1/2 fusion 3 mths ago. Whether the stabilisation of the operation or the slight shift off nerves, or even the reduction of chronic inflammation or even all three were the key(s), I’ve had great relief so far. It took a lot of persistence to get there and information and support from this group but what I know is that radiologists rarely mention c1/2 in reports, miss elongated styloids and people continue to get dismissed and suffer.

incidentally- I also wonder whether styloids elongate to stabilise the cervical spine, I had already had bone spurs and was told my spine was trying to stabilise itself, albeit the bone growth is not always where you want it!

@Mcwelly - We have speculated that one reason for styloid elongation is the brain sensing instability in the cervical spine & thus tries to stabilize it via styloid elongation &/or stylohyoid ligament calcification. I/we completely agree that our bodies may have good intentions, but their efforts to keep strong & stable can be misguided.
