Eye problems

Has anyone here developed Horners syndrome from their Eagles syndrome. I had a TIA like event that caused eye drooping about 3 weeks (did not find stroke or TIA) and ever since then my eye intermittently gets slightly droopy and bloods shot and burns. I also have eye pain and pressure in that eye on my bad side. It got pretty obvious today so i took a picture

You might want to get checked for Sjogrens as a differential diagnosis. I have one eye that does this more than the other. I have tested positive for Pre-Sjogrens at Quest Lab, have a high ANA, and the rapid eye test for MMP-9 was positive.
I do have dry eyes but not dry mouth.
I also have an MRI that shows lacunar strokes and micro bleeds but no physical signs that gets attributed to a typical stroke.

In other words, you may be a mess of different things all combining to cause a problem. Yeah, Eagles

@Swent39 - We’ve had several members who’ve been diagnosed w/ Horner’s relative to internal carotid irritation/compression by their styloid(s). Since you’ve had a TIA type event, it makes sense that you could have Horner’s, but as @JugularEagle says, there are other things that could also be at the root of your eye symptoms.

I am seeing an eye Doctor today so I am going to bring up this issue.

I started getting dry eyes & mouth at the same time as my ES symptoms ramped up, although the Sjogrens test was negative. It’s never gone away & I regularly get pain and blood shot eyes. I was never sure if it was the inflammation from ES causing symptoms of an autoimmune condition, or possibly the Trigeminal nerve being affected by the styloids- I believe one of it’s functions is to innervate the glands in the eye which produce moisture. The facial nerve can also be affected with ES & can cause drooping eyelids.
It’s certainly worth checking if your eyes are dry…

My regular Sjogrens test is negative. Its the pre sjogrens test showing a problem. At eye Dr now. Horners test if you have dialated pupils is they put something in eye and see if it constricts. Mine arent dialated so no test. Pressure in eyes when i turn my head 25. I run 19 prior to trying this. Mmp 9 rapid test is positive. However, we didnt run a control on pressure. Meaning testing in neutral before turning head.
Dr had me do the pressure test again with their microscope which can only be done in neutral position versus the hand held device
. The microscope came in at 19 but the tech said she couldn’t do the hand held again because it was being used elsewhere.

So I have no conclusion from that appointment. They made a comment that is hard for me to believe but I don’t have enough information. Turning my head right with a measure wont change eye pressure when my head goes neutral. In the hand held test the pressure was the same left, right, neutral.

@JugularEagle - I’m sorry your testing was inconclusive. Bet annoying that the handheld device was unavailable for you as it sounds like getting another result by that approach could have been helpful. Were you able to discuss results with an ophthalmologist or an optometrist?

Here is what should have taken place for any of you that want to try this next time at eye doctor.

Head held in neutral position. Turn to the least restrictive side and then take measurement. Turn to most restrictive side and then take measurement. Then IMMEDIATELY go to the gold standard microscope version that can only be done in neutral position.

If you can’t get them to immediately do it then sit there talking while looking at the doctor from the most restrictive side.

I am not sure if you can come to any reliable conclusion but it might give you an idea.

Also, I am borderline with pressure so why are they not using gold standard on me every time.? I think Eagle people need to ask for the microscope eye pressure test.

When I originally brought up Eagle Syndrome to this Doctor and showed her information from a study that specified eye problems she said she wasn’t sure how that could happen.

So basically worthless except to look at my optic nerve to see if it look okay. She also said my dry eyes wouldn’t be from the Styloids . I couldn’t counter that because I didn’t pay enough attention to the posts outlining why it can.

Also, some information I saw said Horner’s syndrome may show up as constricted pupils but this Doctors office didn’t do any testing because my pupils didn’t look large. The pupils of the original poster were definitely not large and may have been constricted due to outside light or maybe she has Horners.

It’s not based on medical research etc, just my own personal experience, research & opinion that ES has contributed to dry eyes…but if you look up the functions of the Trigeminal nerve which is one of the nerves most commonly affected by ES it does mention innervating the lacrimal glands… frustrating that the pressure testing for you wasn’t done in the gold standard way! I had a terrible experience with pressure testing at our local opticians with a girl having her practical exam, I ended up with a scratched cornea & vast differences in my eye pressures, had to be tested again, told I was at risk because of the pressure, then I wasn’t, it’s put me off ever having that done again, if I do it will be with someone much more experienced!

Eye topic thoughts:-

Do see opthomologist/eye surgeon if eyes a problem.

Higher pressure in bad eye a red flag

Temp loss of vision, with recovery, a red flag

If get double vision or sight loss your vI cranial nerve or muscle may be affected. Track eyes on pen moving in front of nose side to side/up & down with help- if one eye not fully following to outside of vision field-seek help

Can get giant cell arteris/temporal arteritis & go perm blind. See Haematology/A&E to go urgently on high dose steroids to save sight. Do not delay. A pET scan of temporal artery is best diagnostic tool.

May be brain affecting sight not just the eyes. A neuro opthomologist deals with both.

If have high pressure in eye could get proptosis, where eye forced forward out of socket. Get optic mRI/ optic surgeon if a concern on this.

In england Westin Hospital in London has walk-in 24x7 emergency eye help. Moorfields has A&E too.

Bloodshot eye may reflect a blood shot brain too.

Optic nerves in brain can affect vision to eyes too.

Hoping no member ever gets any serious eye issues but best to be aware if what could happen so seek right urgent help when needed. D
