Hi all! I have been diagnosed with Nutcracker Syndrome, hEDS and have dysautonomia and neurological symptoms. Out of curiosity, I requested my most recent pano xray from the dentist, and I see what appears to be calcification of the stylohyoid on L side. I don’t know if it is considered long, or if the angle is abnormal; but I am also convinced I can feel it through palpation under my jaw. I have some TMJD symptoms but it is not adding up. I’d like to attach a pic, though haven’t been able to find a way to successfully do so.
Advice much appreciated!
Hi pigeon. It is true that angle and thickness of the styloid are important, not just length. One of the mods will approve you for images soon. I also had TMJ, it was more muscle based, some symptoms resolved after treatment, but many persisted. I found out about ES around the same time and am now set for first surgery on 11/11
@wtfpigeon - Welcome to our forum! Good work finding your L styloid. Even though nothing is easily visible on the right doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on there. A CT of the area between skull base & hyoid bone is the gold standard for diagnosing ES. It would be great if your doctor or an ENT would refer you for one.
I’ve circled your left styloid in the image below.
Hi & welcome to the forum! It’s certainly got a real curve towards the end, & looks like it might have a ‘joint’ although not clear enough with the x-ray; this could be that the stylo-hyoid ligament has calcified at the end of the styloid process. Not that it makes any difference to symptoms or treatments…
I’m sorry that you have so much else going on, you have more than your share
I hope you’re able to get a CT & a referral to a doctor with ES experience!
