Can you feel it?

Can anyone feels theirs? Asking because I can feel mine rubbing on either my jaw or something else and it makes a clicking sound/sensation when I swallow. Also, if this something that is progressive? Like of not taken care of continues to get worse or longer etc?

yeah, I could kind of feel mine stretching stuff in my neck when I turn to the left or right. Umm, so it can sort of progress or it can hold where it is; but, its not really ever magically going to get better. Some folks can manage symptoms, but surgery is the most complete treatment.

Hi @Maddy - I could feel my styloid under my jaw on the left side. It was a hard lump that I thought was a blocked salivary gland at first. When I poked it, it made the left front of my neck hurt. I could feel my right one in the soft area directly under my earlobe when I pressed there.

Depending on the angle your styloid is growing, it is possible it could touch/rub on your jaw. Clicking when you swallow can be a sign of stylohyoid ligament calcification & sometimes Hyoid Bone Syndrome which is where one or both of the greater horns of the hyoid grow too long. This can happen along with ES or on its own.

ES is progressive & often symptoms get worse over time as the styloids can continue to grow. That said, ES surgery is major surgery, & if your symptoms are manageable for the time being, it’s ok to wait until they become more pronounced before going ahead with surgery.

I could feel it around my tonsils (right side) When I touched it intraorally, it caused a lot of pain. I could also “find” the same pain when pressing upwards just to the right of the hyoid bone from the outside of my neck.

It was only a couple months back I realised I could find this pain intraorally too (this has been going on for years)
