Hi, Iâve just sent you a welcome message with some info!
In the Doctors Info Section we have a 2019 list of doctors familiar with ES outside of the US. Thereâs more details on the list if you check it out, but we know of doctors in Hamburg, Bonn, & Bochum if that helps you.
Ich wurde in Bonn operiert.
Translation:
I had surgery in Bonn.
Bist du zufrieden mit der Op wie war es vorher, was war nachher besser?
Translation:
Are you satisfied with the surgery? What was it like before, what was better afterwards?
Da Bin ich immer noch unschlĂŒssig leider.
Ich glaube aber das man dich in Bonn sehr gut beraten wird.
Alles gute.

Iâm still undecided, unfortunately.
But I think youâll get very good advice in Bonn.
All the best.
Ich suche einen Spezialisten fĂŒr Hyoid Bone Syndrome (HBS) in Deutschland oder in der NĂ€he.
Hat jemand einen Arzt oder eine Klinik, die Erfahrung damit hat?
Translation:
Iâm looking for a specialist for Hyoid Bone Syndrome (HBS) in Germany or nearby.
Does anyone know of a doctor or clinic with experience in this area?
Hi @mjzago ,
I did some literature digging on Hyoid Bone Syndrome / hyoid-related pain specifically in Germany, to see where there are doctors who have actually published on this region (hyoid / larynx / âclickingâ etc.). There donât seem to be any big âHyoid Bone Syndrome centersâ in Germany, but a few people/clinics stand out as potential contacts based on their publications:
- Hannover â Medical School Hannover (MHH)
There is a German paper on âclicking larynx syndromeâ from the Department of Phoniatrics / Paedaudiology at MHH:
Jungheim M, Miller S, Ptok M. âDas Clicking-Larynx-Syndrom â LiteraturĂŒbersicht und Fallberichteâ, HNO 2013.
PubMed: [Clicking larynx syndrome : a literature review and multiple-case report] - PubMed
They describe patients with painful clicking in the neck area, some treated surgically (resection/shortening of bony structures around the hyoid and thyroid cartilage). Even though the diagnosis is âclicking larynxâ, clinically itâs very close to hyoid bone/anterior cervical pain syndromes.
So a larger ENT/phoniatrics clinic like MHH Hannover may be worth contacting, especially if the pain/clicking is clearly in the hyoidâlarynx area.
- Augsburg (formerly LMU Munich) â PD Dr. Thomas Braun
There is a case report directly on the hyoid:
Braun T, Reichel O. âSnapping joint of the hyoid boneâ, J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 2012.
PubMed: Snapping joint of the hyoid bone - PubMed
This describes a mechanical problem at the hyoid (âsnapping jointâ) with pain and snapping, treated surgically.
The same author now runs his own ENT practice:
PD Dr. med. Thomas Braun, MHBA â ENT practice in Augsburg
Practice website: https://www.braun-hno.de
That combination (published case of snapping hyoid + current ENT practice) makes him a reasonable person to ask about hyoid-related problems.
- Pforzheim â Siloah St. Trudpert Hospital, ENT Department (PD Dr. Oliver Reichel)
Co-author of the same âsnapping hyoidâ paper is PD Dr. Oliver Reichel, who is now head of an ENT department:
ENT clinic: Klinik fĂŒr Hals-Nasen-Ohrenheilkunde, Kopf- und Hals-Chirurgie, Siloah St. Trudpert Klinikum, Pforzheim
Clinic page: https://www.siloah.de/kliniken-zentren/klinik-fuer-hals-nasen-ohrenheilkunde-kopf-und-hals-chirurgie/
Again, not a branded âHyoid Centerâ, but at least a head of department who has published on hyoid snapping/pain and runs a surgical ENT unit.
- Cologne â âClicking Larynxâ cases (Kölner Dysphagiezentrum / M. Weinert)
From Cologne there are congress abstracts on Clicking Larynx:
Abstract: ââClicking Larynxâ â ein seltenes PhĂ€nomen? Wenn Schaben und Knacken beim Schlucken die LebensqualitĂ€t massiv einschrĂ€nkt!â
DGE-BV / DGD 2023 abstracts (PDF, German):
The abstract lists M. Weinert, Cologne, Kölner Dysphagiezentrum as author.
Kölner Dysphagiezentrum (Reha & Wissen KDZ) â interdisciplinary dysphagia centre in Cologne:
They focus on dysphagia, but the âclicking larynxâ abstract shows they see patients with painful clicking when swallowing, i.e. in the same family as anterior cervical / hyoidâlarynx problems.
Might be useful at least for diagnostics and detailed functional assessment (imaging + swallowing studies), and possibly as a gateway to surgeons they cooperate with.
All of these conditions (clicking larynx, snapping hyoid, anterior cervical pain syndromes) are structurally and symptom-wise very close to what is often described as Hyoid Bone Syndrome, so if youâre specifically looking for German doctors with documented experience in that region, Iâd probably start with these names/clinics.
I really hope youâll be able to find someone who takes this seriously and can help you soon.
Thank you for taking the time to help @mjzago with the names of doctors who may be able to help him. I very much appreciate you, @TheDude! This information is very valuable for our German/European members.
Thank you so much for finding & posting all this info @TheDude , youâre a star ![]()
And you can probably add the private clinic where Dr. Nils Heim is referring or performs ES surgeries with Dr. Warwas

Thank you, @TheDude. Iâve updated the information for Dr. Heim & added Dr. Warwas with him. Good to have current information about Dr. Heim!
Hello @TheDude and many thanks â this is really helpful. I will definitely contact the clinic in Hannover to see if I can get an appointment. That is quite convenient for me, since itâs not far from where I live.
